WHAT IS PRESSURE GAUGE?
Pressure gauges are used for the measurement of an
applied force by a fluid (liquid or gas) on a surface.
Pressure is typically measured in units of force per
unit of surface area. Many techniques have been
developed for the measurement of pressure and
vacuum. Instruments used to measure and display
pressure mechanically are called pressure gauges,
vacuum gauges or compound gauges (vacuum &
pressure).
MAIN TYPES OF PRESSURE GAUGE :
Depending on the usability and purpose whether it is for commercial purpose or industrial
purpose, most common pressure gauges are designed. Some of the pressure gauges are:
1. Bourdon Tube Pressure Gauge
2. Diaphragm Pressure Gauge
3. Bellows Pressure Gauge

DIAPHRAGM PRESSURE GAUGE

The diaphragm pressure gauge is a type of pressure

measuring instrument that uses a flexible
diaphragm to measure the pressure of a fluid or gas.
It is commonly used in industrial applications to
monitor and control pressure levels. Also, used in
vaccums,aircompressors,hydraulic applications etc.
CONSTRUCTION
DIAPHRAGM(FLAT)
Construction: It is made up of rubber or other material flexible. Making a diaphragm slack rather than
tight allows it to move large distance in response to a small pressure. A pointer is attached is with the
diaphragm via linkage. Pressure is applied at the input and is indicated on the scale.

Working Principle: Unknown pressure is applied to the input p1 of the gauge which will exerts force on the slack
diaphragm. When a force acts against a thin stretched diaphragm. It a deflection of the diaphragm with its
center deflecting the most. This movement is transferred to the pointer mechanism via leaf spring.
1. Non-metallic diaphragm are used for measuring very small pressures.
2. The commonly used materials for making the diaphragm are polythene, neoprene, animal membrane,
silk and synthetic materials.
3. The common range for pressure measurement varies between (50pa – 0.1)mpa.
Housing: The housing encloses and protects the diaphragm and other internal
components. It is usually made of a durable material such as metal or plastic.
Pressure Port: The pressure port is the point of contact between the diaphragm and
the process fluid. It allows the pressure to be transmitted to the diaphragm.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
● Firstly , It is made up of a diaphragm (B), which is a thin
circular metal sheet that can be flat or corrugated. When
pressure is applied, the diaphragm deflection should be linear.

● Then , Only tiny deflections may be guaranteed with a flat

diaphragm. The diaphragm can be welded or clamped in place
between the flanges.

● Finally , The diaphragm deflects as pressure is introduced to

the system through the inlet (D). This deflection is translated
into pointer (C) movement via the link (A) and gears, resulting
in a precise measurement of the change in pressure.
Types of Diaphragm Pressure Gauge

Metallic Diaphragm Gauge Slack Diaphragm Gauge

It is constructed consisting of a thin, flexible A slack diaphragm gauge with a weak spring and a
diaphragm made out of brass or bronze. The large area can be used over pressure ranges as low
diaphragm moves, which controls an indicating as 0.01- 0.40 mm Hg (torr). Because the
or recording instrument. Because this sort of fluctuations are minor, measuring pressure below
gauge may work in any position atmospheric pressure is more challenging.Only 14.7
and is portable, it is highly suited for use or psi (1 kg/cm2)separates air pressure from the

pressure here.It is possible to attain 1-2% accuracy.

4. No permanent zero shift. 3.These gauges are difficult to be repaired
5. They can measure both absolute
