WHAT IS A CONSTELLATION?

• A constellation is a group of stars that


form a recognisable pattern in the sky.
• The word `constellation’ is Latin for `set
with stars’.
DO YOU KNOW ???

• There are 88 official constellations.


• Some constellations belong to the same family
• Constellations names are mostly related to the shapes
they form.
BIGGEST AND SMALLEST ..AND THE
FAMOUS!!

• The biggest constellation is Hydra (The water snake)


• The smallest constellation is Crux
• The most recognizable pattern is Orion.
DO THEY TRAVEL???

• Yes!!! They do..


• Just like the sun, constellations travel from east to west.
• Additionally they have a cycle of 365 days just like our
year.
SOME MAJOR CONSTELLATIONS

• Ursa Major (The great Bear)


• Ursa Minor (Little Bear)
• Orion( Hunter)
• Leo (Lion)
• Cassiopeia (Distorted W or M)
3 MAIN PURPOSES OF CONSTELLATIONS

• They act as landmarks for those who study stars


• They helped in navigation
• They helped farmers to decide when to plant and harvest.
