Definition

Vector comes from Latin word.

Vehere(convey) vector(Carrier) vector(Mid-Century).

An item with both magnitude and direction is referred to be a vector. A vector can be
visualised geometrically as a directed line segment, with an arrow pointing in the direction and a
length equal to the magnitude of the vector. The vector points in a direction from its tail to its
head.
Some Classifications of Vector

Equal vector Opposite vector

Two vectors A and B are equal if they have the A vector having direction opposite to that
same magnitude and direction. of vector A but having the same magnitude
is denoted by – A.

A=B A=(-A)
Proper Vector
Null vector

If A = B, the A-B is defined as the A vector which is not null is a

null or zero vector and is proper vector.
represented by the symbol 0.
It has no magnitude and no specific
direction.
Non-Collinear Vector Non-Coplanar Vectors
Non-Collinear vector are vectors Non-coplanar vectors are vectors which
which are not parallel to the same are not parallel to the same plane. Hence
line. Hence when their initial when their initial points coincide they do
points coincide, they determine a not lie in the same plane.
plane.
Real Life Applications Of Vector

1.Physics and Mechanics: Vectors are used extensively in physics to describe the
motion of objects. Velocity, acceleration, force, and momentum are all vector quantities.
They help predict and analyze the behavior of physical systems.

3. Game Development: In video game design, vectors are essential for character
movement, collision detection, and physics simulations.

2. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): GIS applications use vectors to represent
geographical features, such as maps, boundaries, and geographical data, facilitating
urban planning, resource management, and navigation.

4. Medical Imaging: Vectors are used in medical imaging to represent the position and
orientation of medical instruments, helping surgeons perform precise procedures.
