Qurans significance and authority
within Islam today;
• For Muslims the Qur'an is the most important
source of authority as it is the word of God, passed
down through the Angel Jibril to the
Prophet Muhammad. It consists of 114 chapters
which were revealed over a period of 23 years. The
Qur'an instructs Muslims on how to behave and sets
out what is right and wrong, as in the example below,
which teaches about fairness:
• Muslims also seek guidance from the Hadith, which are
writings about the life of the Prophet Muhammad. They were
remembered by close followers of the Prophet and were later
written down. They teach Muslims how to live their lives, and
to understand and follow the teachings of the Qur'an.
• When a Muslim follows the example of the Prophet
Muhammad as laid out in the Hadith, they are following the
Sunnah, or customary practices of the Prophet. These
practices may become second nature, for example the actions
Muslims undertake while they are praying.
