Introduction

• An overflow of a large amount of water beyond its normal limits based on the type
of area is called as “Flood”.
• Floods are an area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant
concern in Agriculture, Civil Engineering and Public Health.
• Ministry of Jal Shakti Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga
Rejuvenation and Natural Disaster Management Authority Government of India
will deals with Flood management and flood control at national level.
• Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Government of Andhra
Pradesh Revenue (DM) Department and Water Resource Department of AP will
deal with floods at state level.

Abstract

◎ The main objective of this study is to delineate flood prone areas in

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India.
◎ The methodology used in this is “TOPOGRAPHIC WETNESS INDEX”.
◎ The final map can be used by local disaster management authorities,
researchers, planners, local government and line agencies dealing with
flood risk management.

◎ The area located between 16.50620 N, 80.64800 E on

the banks of river KRISHNA.
◎ The area of VIJAYAWADA 181.04 km2
◎ Population – 14,76,931(according to 2011 census).
◎ Literacy rate – 82.59%
