COGNITIVE RADIO DEFINITIONS

A radio that can change its transmitter parameters based on interaction with the environment in which it operates. Federal Communications Commission.

TYPES OF CR

There are two types of Cognitive Radio.

Full cognitive radio. spectrum-sensing cognitive radio

COGNITION CYCLE BY MITOLA

ADVANTAGES

Improve use of spectrum resources. Reduce engineering and planning time. Adaptation to current operating conditions.

APPLICATIONS

Enhancing SDR techniques Automated radio resource management.

SPECTRUM SENSING

Cognitive Radio network - Important requirement - sense spectrum holes.

Detecting - unused spectrum - sharing it.

Detecting PU - efficient way - detect spectrum holes

Primary User (PU):

Licensed user

Has exclusive rights for the spectrum

Secondary User (SU):

Unlicensed user Also called cognitive user Opportunistically utilizes the white spaces Has to vacate the spectrum band as soon as a PU appears

INTERFERENCE

The primary users are the licensed users. The secondary users should get permission from the

PUs to utilize the available free spectrums in the

cognitive radio environment.

The SUs should not interfere with the PUs while they utilizes the available white spaces in the spectrum.

SIDE LOBE SUPPRESSION

The side lobes of the secondary users need to be kept below a specific value to ensure negligible interference to the primary users.

This technique is used to achieve lower out-of-band interference.

SIDE LOBE SUPPRESSION TECHNIQUES
