Introduction
An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting
from a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that
creates seismic waves.

8.0< Serious Severe destruction and loss of life in large areas Less than 3

7.0-7.9 Higher Serious damage to large areas and loss of life 3-20

01
Movement of Tectonic Plates
The tectonic plates that make up the earth's
crust are moving constantly. As the edges
of these plates slide against each other in
fault zones, friction can slow them down,
leading to the buildup of pressure over
long periods of time.
02
Volcanic Earthhquake
Volcanically-caused long period
earthquakes are produced by vibrations
generated by the movement of magma or
other fluids within the volcano.
Deforestation
03 Cutting down trees on steep slopes
may increase the risk of not only
landslides but earthquakes in heavily
deforested places such as Haiti,
which suffered a devastating
magnitude 7 quake in 2010.
04
Dams
When the pressure of the water in the rocks increases, it acts to
lubricate faults which are already under tectonic strain, but are
prevented from slipping by the friction of the rock surfaces.
Mining
05
Tremors occurring in underground mines are an
example of induced seismic activity, which is a
result of rock deformations caused by excavation
of some volume of rocks.
06 Heavy Rain

A deluge of rain can trigger earthquakes

in certain landscapes by increasing
pressure within underlying rock.
