A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
Presented By :

OUTLINES
 What is Petroleum Engineering ???
 Classification of Petroleum Engineering ???
 What can I do after being a Petroleum Engineer (The role of
petroleum engineers in the present scenario) ???
 Patience and hard work.
 Scope , future prospects & careers.
 Current research projects running under faculties in
‘Department of Petroleum Engineering’ at Glocal University.
INTRODUCTION
 The word PETROLEUM is derived from a Latin word
‘Petra’ meaning rock and ‘oleum’ meaning oil.

 Petroleum engineering is a field of

engineering concerned with the activities related to the
production of hydrocarbons, which can be either
crude oil or natural gas.
CLASSIFICATION
Petroleum sector is broadly classified into two sectors :-

1. Upstream

2. Midstream

3. Downstream
CLASSIFICATION
UPSTREAM
 The upstream oil sector is also commonly known as
the exploration and production (E&P) sector.
 The upstream sector includes the searching for

potential underground or underwater crude oil and

natural gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and
subsequently drilling and operating the wells that
recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas
to the surface.
AN OVERVIEW OF UPSTREAMING PROCESS
.
DOWNSTREAM
 The downstream sector commonly refers to the
refining of petroleum crude oil and the
processing and purifying of raw natural gas, as well as
the marketing and distribution of products derived
from crude oil and natural gas. The downstream sector
touches consumers through products such as
gasoline or petrol, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil,
heating oil, fuel oils, lubricants, waxes, asphalt,
natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well
as hundreds of petrochemicals.
DOWNSTREAM (REFINING)
 Crude oil is a mixture of many varieties of
hydrocarbons and most usually has many
sulphur-containing compounds. The oil refining
process commonly includes hydrodesulphurization
which converts most of that sulphur into gaseous
hydrogen sulphide. Raw natural gas also may contain
gaseous hydrogen sulphide and sulphur-containing
mercaptans, which are removed in
natural gas processing plants before the gas is
distributed to consumers.

PATIENCE & HARD WORK
 Have patience

“Work hard. And have patience. Because no matter who

you are, you're going to get hurt in your career and you
have to be patient to get through the injuries.”

 Develop excellence

 Be determined for your goal.

These are undoubtedly the key to success.

CAREERS & FUTURE PROSPECTS
 The petroleum sector lie amongst one of the biggest and
well paid employment sector.
 Petroleum Engineers are also known as ‘KING
ENGINEERS’, because they are the highest paid
engineers.
 The petroleum sector is the GIANT sector. It is bigger the
Bollywood and Hollywood.
 According to a report submitted by OPEC , King
Abdullah (who died on 23rd January 2015) of Saudi
Arabia declared that we are not running short of oil and
middle eastern countries has the potential to produce oil
for another 150 years.
UPSTREAM
 Reservoir engineers work to optimize production of oil and
gas via proper well placement, production rates, and
enhanced oil recovery techniques.
 Drilling engineers manage the technical aspects of drilling
exploratory, production and injection wells.
 Production engineers, including subsurface engineers,
manage the interface between the reservoir and the well,
including perforations, sand control, downhole flow control,
and downhole monitoring equipment; evaluate artificial lift
methods; and also select surface equipment that separates
the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water).
CAREERS & FUTURE PROSPECTS
 The downstream industry includes petroleum
refineries, gas processing plants,
petrochemical plants, transportation networks
(truck, rail, pipeline and marine), retail gas
stations and natural gas distribution
companies. Downstream also includes the
sales and marketing of refined petroleum
products to wholesalers, industrial and
commercial customers.
