INTRODUCTION

Aim:
To find unknown low resistance using
Carey foster bridge.
Apparatus
 Carey Foster Bridge
 Fractional resistance box
 Battery or Leclanche cell
 A galvanometer
 Jockey and keys
Principle
 It works on the principle of
Wheatstone bridge.
 Wheatstone bridge is simply
an arrangement of four resistances
use to find one unknown resistance.
 According to Wheatstone bridge
relation between these four Fig1:Circuit diagram
resistances is given as: of wheatstone P/
Q=R/S bridge
Construction
 It consists of copper strips with four gaps m,x,y,n
which act as four arms of Wheat Stone Bridge. A
uniform wire EF of length 1m is stretched on
wooden board as shown in fig 2.
 Two equal resistance P and Q are connected in gap
x and y.
 A galvanometer G is connected between terminal B
and a sliding contact maker C which is used to
detect small current.
 J is jockey that slides on wire used to find null point.

Result and discussion
 In this experiment the jokey is moved until the
bridge is balanced. Let L1 be the balancing
length as measured from end E. Let α and β be
the end resistances at E and F. Let ꝭ be the
resistance per unit length of the wire.
 From the principle of wheat stone bridge,
P/Q= (R+α+L1ꝭ)/ (S+β+(100-L1)ꝭ)
 Resistance R and S are interchanged and the
bridge is again balanced. The balancing L2 is
determined from the same end E, then
P/Q= (S+α+L2ꝭ)/ (R+β+(100-L2)ꝭ)
From both the equations we find the unknown low
resistance wire is given by,
S=R +ꝭ(L1-L2)
Note- the unknown low resistance is determined in
Ω (ohm).
 Furthermore one can also find the value of
resistance of wire by using Multimeter.
Multimetre measure resistance by injecting a
small current into the circuit and then
measuring the voltage drop across those
points in the circuit.
 Therefore one can also compare both the
values and find the percentage error.
Results
 From the above mentioned experiment we
find:
1. The resistance per unit length of bridge wire
is 0.0496 Ω/m.
2. Mean calculated value of unknown low
resistance of given wire is 2.695Ω.
3. Observed value by using Multimeter is 2.55Ω.
4. Percentage Error is equal to 5.49%.

3.Application and Findings

Main purpose of Carey Foster Bridge which

works on the principle Wheat Stone Bridge is
to determine the low resistance of any wire.
The main difference between Carey Foster
Bridge and Wheat Stone Bridge is that
sensitivity of Carey Foster Bridge is higher
than Wheat Stone Bridge.
 Other applications of Carey Foster Bridge are
as follows:
1. To find intensity of light
Using Wheat Stone Bridge we can construct light
detector circuit to find the intensity of light
as shown in fig3.
Application:
 Automatic Street light ,bedroom lights
 Light intensity meters
 It can be used with LED as obstacle detector.

2. To measure the Strain
Stain gauge is to measure strain applied in a
material. To measure strain, one arm of
Wheatstone bridge is attached with strain gauge
as shown in fig4.
Application:
 Medical devices
 Smart phones
 Bathroom scales.

Wheatstone bridge
3. To measure Pressure
We can find unknown pressure of a gas or fluid, using
resistive strain gauge combined with Wheat Stone
Bridge as shown in fig5.
It consists of Wheat Stone Bridge, along resistor strip,
say XY, and a capsule divided by a membrane. Here
Wheat Stone Bridge is used to find changes in
resistance of resistor strip.

bridge)
