Respiration assessment

A focused respiratory objective assessment includes

interpretation of vital signs; inspection of the patient's
breathing pattern, skin color, and respiratory status;
palpation to identify abnormalities; and auscultation
of lung sounds using a stethoscope.

Thomas Brack and Ulrich Silvia

Classification of respiration assessment

• Inspection: (looking at the body)

• Palpation: (feeling the body with fingers or hands)

• Percussion: (producing sounds, usually by tapping on specific

areas of the body)

• Auscultation: (listening to sounds, usually with a stethoscope)

Signs & symptoms of respiratory difficulty

People having trouble breathing often show signs that they are having
to work harder to breathe or are not getting enough oxygen.

Measurement or(Laboratory tests )
• Spirometry measures airflow. By measuring
how much air you exhale, and how quickly you
exhale, spirometry can evaluate a broad range
of lung diseases. In a spirometry test, while
you are sitting, you breathe into a mouthpiece
that is connected to an instrument called a
spirometer. Heather Baid, 2016
Risk Factors of respiration

• The risk factors for respiratory issues can vary widely depending on the
specific condition however some common risk factors include

• Smoking

• Air pollution

• Occupational exposures (like chemicals or dust) allergies

• Respiratory infection and underlying health conditions such as athama

(COPD)

• Additionally lifestyle factors like poor diet and lack of exercise can also
contribute to respiratory problems
Nursing Diagnosis & Management.

• Nursing diagnosis involves assessing a patient’s health status

identifying potential issues and formulating a plan for care.

• Ineffective breathing pattern

• Impaired gas exchange

• Risk for aspiration

Medical management

• They may include medications (bronchodilators,

corticosteroids, antibiotics, etc.), oxygen therapy, pulmonary
rehabilitation, lifestyle changes, allergen immunotherapy,
surgery, and management of co-existing conditions.

Nursing consideration

• Inspection during a focused respiratory assessment includes observation of level

of consciousness,

• breathing rate (between 12–20 breaths per minute.)

• skin color (is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin
become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin.)

• chest configuration (a coordinated movement of the chest wall and abdomen

moving outward on inspiration and inward on expiration. )

• symmetry of expansion.(capacity of the lungs related to age and (physio-pedia.com,

gender) 2021)
