 The components of the linguistic and ethnic
barrier are differences in language
systems, language norms, usages and pre-
information stocks of speakers. Linguistic and
ethnic features of the original language are most
clearly embodied in the gaps of realities
and phraseological units.
GAPS. TYPOLOGY OF
LACUNAE.
 Lacuna (from Latin lacuna - space, recess) - basic elements national specificity of the
linguistic and cultural community, complicating translation of its texts and their
perception by foreign cultural recipients due to absence in one language compared to
another of certain correspondences of linguistic units of different levels, designations of
concepts, categories, associative reactions, and as well as paraverbal means of speech.
 Gaps contradict the usual range of experience of a speaker, a native speaker of another
language. The main features of lacunae are incomprehensibility, unusualness
(exoticism), foreignness

Лакуна (від лат. lacuna – пробіл, заглиблення) – базові елементи національної специфіки лінгвокультурної спільноти, що
ускладнюють переклад її текстів і сприй няття їх іншокультурними реципієнтами через відсутність в одній мові
порівняно з іншою певних відповідників мовних одиниць різних рівнів, позначень понять, категорій , асоціативних
реакцій , а також паравербальних засобів мовлення [Селіванова 2010, с. 321]. Лакуни суперечать звичному діапазону
досвіду мовця, носія іншої мови. Головними ознаками лакун є незрозумілість, незвичність (екзотичність), чужість.
Systemic gaps are differentiated depending on the
language level into: phonetic (absence of certain
phonemes in one language, inconsistency
intonation structures, stress, pauses): yes, they are
absent in Ukrainian long phonemes, which take
place in English and German and differentiate the
meaning of words:

англ. bed [bed] – ліжко, а bird [bə:d] – птах;

англ. pool [pu:l] – калюжа, а pull [pul] –
тягти; англ. eat [it:] – їсти, а it [it] – воно;
нім. Beet [be:t] – клумба, а Bett [bɛt] –
ліжко
 The composition of functional gaps include: activity-
communicative (discrepancy of various kinds of
communicatively relevant horse - phonation,
gestures, facial expressions, body movements, head,
legs; type of gaze, distance of communicants, time
features of communication, touching, posture etc.).
Head nodding in Ukrainians - yes, in Bulgarians - no.
 Within the framework of national-psychological
lacunae are distinguished character gaps according
to the self-esteem of the ethnic group or its
assessment by other ethnic groups; internal
syllogistic gaps that represent the way of thinking of
the people; cultural-emotional, concerning the
public expression of feelings; lacunae of humour

DISHES, UNITS OF MEASURE, HOLIDAYS, RITUALS, ETC., AS WELL AS PERCEPTIONS DIS
TANCES, ETHNOGRAPHIC, RELATED TO EVERYDAY LIFE, LACUNAE OF CULTURAL STOC
K (SYMBOLIC)).
