Introduction
Panauti Hydropower
•Panauti hydropower station (Khopasi Hydropower station) is the third hydropower
station which was constructed in Nepal.
•This power station is located at Khopasi, Kavre district, 35km east of Kathmandu
and 7km south-east from Panauti Bazar.
•It was built in 1965 with the assistance form then Soviet Union at a cost of NRs. 27
million.
•It has capacity of 2.4 MW, form 3 units of 0.8 MW each. (But currently only one
unit is active)

Objectives:
•To improve the power production capacity of hydropower through
Rehabilitation, Upgradation and Maintenance of hydropower components and
structures.
•To provide alternatives if RUM cannot be conducted.
Limitations:

Current Status of Panauti Hydropower
Khopasi Hydropower has been running for more than 55 years. Due to old age of the
project the component must require proper investigation to enhance its capability.
In the past power generation was completely stopped due to turbine malfunction but
after repairing one turbine, they managed to generate 400KW of power through the
designed capacity was 2.4MW. But now it is further decreased.
We came to know that water channel of the dam has been obstructed and used for
irrigation purposes in many places which reduced the power production of plant.
Major sediment that flows through the Roshi River is sand which when directly his the
turbine, damages it.

Finding Through Investigation
•Although there are many components in hydropower our
group is focused in Canal, Reservoir and Forebay.
Canal:
The canal is partly concreted and partly earthen and also in
good condition where we barely see crack and damage. So
there may not require any modification and rehabilitation.
Total length of canal = 3.721km
Width of canal connected in Reservoir= 2m
Height of canal= 2m

Finding Through Investigation
Reservoir and Forebay:
As Panauti if peaking Run of River Hydropower
(PRoR) also reservoir is attached with Forebay
basin.

Currently the physical condition of Reservoir is

good but we came to know that underground
cleaning is not performed for long time which
definitely has decreased the storage capacity of
reservoir.

Erosion can be seen in the gate that connects Reservoir

Forebay and Reservoir. Source: Google Earth

Design of Reservoir
We have,
Discharge form intake canal=2.4m3/s form Q40 discharge.
Turbine rated discharge=1.6m3/s (Single Turbine)
We have 3 Francis Turbine but two of them is not in working condition but if we
manage to operate 2 where one will be operated in low demand time and another
one is operated in high demand time we can generate more power.

Lets Take low demand Time (11pm-6am) (10am-6pm)

Design of Reservoir
Capacity of reservoir = maximum (+ve) water at reservoir + maximum (-ve)
water at reservoir
= 29040 + 0 = 29,040 m³
So, minimum capacity of reservoir capacity should be of 29040 m3
But real volume of Reservoir is already 50,040m3. Hence the size of Reservoir is
ok.

Collection of Hydrological and Meteorological Data from DHM for further
analysis and design.
Develop 3D model of components.
Identifying further problems and suggesting way to increase hydropower power
production capacity

Conclusion
Canal and Penstock were in good condition.
Reservoir needs cleaning.
Efficiency of Turbine and Generator are reduced due to old age.
Due to Irrigation, drinking water supply and water mills along the course of Roshi khola The average
power production is 400kw which is in decreasing trend.
People are increasing using the canal water for various purpose ranging from domestic uses like
washing clothes, lift irrigation in addition to already provided openings/gates and other animal husbandry
related uses.
The result of these non-climatic drivers in amalgamation with the changing climate, has resulted in the
downfall of the hydropower generation.
Hence, other proposed HEP could be a long term solution of this problem.
