Course Objectives
● To understand the meaning of history as an academic
discipline and to be familiar with the underlying
philosophy and methodology of the discipline
● Analyze important events that contributed to the
development of the society
● Identify the operations of the government; and evaluate
how bureaucratic processes can be improved

● Exhibit political consciousness and maturity towards
nation-building
● Cultivates values and morals through a deepened
understanding of historical events
● Formulate possible solutions to the dilemmas the society
faced through the study of theories in history

History and Relevance of History
History
● The word history has been derived from the
Greek word “historia” which means inquiry
or knowledge.
● Study of the past
● History as a discipline existed for around
2,400 years
● Is a systematic account of a set of
phenomena, whether or not chronological.
History

● Systematically studies past accounts


of people, groups of people, culture,
past events such as wars, civilization
revolution and etc.
● It is the interpretative and imaginative
study of surviving records of the past,
either written or unwritten.

History Vs. Historiography

History: object of the study is the past, the events that


happened in the past , and the causes of such events.

Historiography: object of study, on the other hand, is


the history itself
History and Historian
● Historian is a person of his own who is influenced by his own
context, environment, ideology, education, and influences,
among others.
● It is the historian's job not just to seek historical evidence and
facts but also to interpret these facts. “Facts cannot speak for
themselves.
● Historical research requires rigor
● Historical methodology comprises certain techniques and rules
that historians follow in order to properly utilize sources and
historical evidences in writing history
