ABSTRACT

MIC (Microbial Influenced Corrosion) is a type of

corrosion that happened on a metal's surface
under the seawater. MIC occurs due to the
colonization of microorganism on the surface.
There are some tests were carried comparison
test, out wet and dry test, atmospheric test, and
hardness test. To find the corrosion progress the
weight loss and corrosion rate is found in the
samples.
Project Objectives

• To study about microbial influenced corrosion of

metals.
• To identify a suitable type of protective coating for
the sample material (alloy steel) used in a real
environment.
• To characterize and optimize the coating and
parameters.
Action taken

• Determine the quantity of the bacteria the quantity of

the bacteria.
• It is attempted to count the number of bacteria; but
could succeed due to unavailability of the
instrumentation in the institute and outside.
• It is suggested in the future work accordingly.
Experimental investigation

Materials
Different materials are used to carry out this project which are:
• Two pools and two oxygen pumps.
• Alloy steel sample.
• Primer (red oxide).
• Coating (epoxy, rubber, polyurethane and chrome).
• Bacteria (E. Coli).
• Seawater.
• 2 oxygen pumps
• Sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
• TSB (Tryptic Soy Broth).
• Filter papers.
• Incubator.
Methodology

1. The metal sample cut out into 25 pieces.

2. Sandpaper (with 100, 120, 180 number) used for blasting the metals.
3. After the blasting the sample coated by different coating (4samples
by rubber, 4 samples by chrome, 4 by polyurethane, 4 by epoxy and
4 without coating for comparing).
4. The samples distributed for each test 5 samples for differentiation.
5. First test is a comparison between the metals in seawater and
metals in seawater with bacteria (E.coli).
6. Second test wet dry test and the last test is atmospheric test.
7. After the coating the sampled weighted then placed in the test to be
started.
8. The metals are monitored every day to see the corrosion progress
and recorded to be analyzed.
Testing

1. Sample preparation
2. Media preparation
3. Bacteria preparation
Experimentation

1. Comparison test between samples in sea water

with and without the bacteria.
2. Wet test

3. Dry test.

4. Atmospheric test.

5. Hardness test
Trail and Errors-Wet Test

In comparing between seawater with and without bacteria test the result as
followed

On going the test and analysis, will be submitted next review

MIC corrosion causes a lot problems, especially for the pipes under
the seawater where the environment condition suitable for
colonization of microorganism. The problem can affect the
production and lead to economic loss. The objective is reached.
The MIC corrosion on metal sample and the coating characteristics
is investigated.
