SOLAR ATMOSPHERE

Aim
• How the Sun's magnetic field is generated and structured
• How this stored magnetic energy is converted and released into the
heliosphere and geospace in the form of solar wind, energetic
particles, and variations in the solar irradiance
CORONA : Solar flares, Solar wind
Rapid increase in temperature
TRANSITION ZONE( 300Km):Spicules

Between 4,500 K and 20,000 K

CHROMOSPHERE (800km)

Between 4,400 and 6,600 K

PHOTOSPHERE(500km): Granules
DYNAMIC
OBSERVATORY(S
DO)
• SDO launched on February 11, 2010

• SDO: The Solar Dynamics Observatory is the first

mission to be launched for NASA's Living With a
Star (LWS) Program, a program designed to
understand the causes of solar variability and its
impacts on Earth

• SDO has three instruments: the Helio seismic and

Magnetic Imager (HMI), the Atmospheric Imaging
Assembly (AIA), and the Extreme Ultraviolet
Variability Experiment (EVE)
HMI and AIA
o HMI: Images of the solar
photosphere near the
Fe absorption line, maps of
velocity (Dopplergrams)and
vector maps of the magnetic
field (magnetograms).

o AIA: Images of the Sun in seven

EUV and three UV/visible
channels
