MEN AT WORK
Application of mathematical problems in real
life scenarios
Learning objectives
▪ Understand the application of different
mathematical concepts;
▪ Explore mathematical relations in real life
situations; and
▪ Develop problem solving skills.
Background of the Problem
▪ Last 2016, in Subic, a 7
hectare sports complex
was proposed and the
goal was after 3 years it
will be publically
available, but the project
was unfinished.
PROBLEM
The Mayor decided to
continue the project. But
the details of the softball
field is gone, the
diamond’s dimension
was left measuring 18.29
meters on each side. The
sides of the triangle are
twice the diamond’s side.
Situation 1
I. The main triangle of the field is
already done and the segment is
soon to be constructed. But the
triangle’s hypotenuse is on the
borderline of the lot making them in
need to buy a piece of rectangular
land from the neighboring land.
1. What is the area of the segment?
2. How big must the rectangular land be? And will the landowner
agree to sell his land if his maximum sellable land is only 560 square
meters? Justify.
Solution for 1 and 2
▪ With the help of special right triangles theorem (45, 45, 90), we can
easily identify the hypotenuse.

▪ Hypotenuse= 36. 58√2 or 51. 73 meters

▪ Legs= 36.58 meters

Atriangle= Asector= Asegment= Asector-Atriangle

Atriangle= Asector= Asegment=1050.9-669.05
Atriangle= 669.05 Asector= Asegment= 38-.85
Asector=1050.9
The dimensions of the rectangular lot
AC= Special right triangle theorem

AC=

AC=25.86m

CF The opposite sides of a rectangle are parallel

CF= AF-AC

CF=36.58-25.86

CF=10.76 m

Arectangle=LW

Arectangle=51.7310.76

Arectangle= 556.6

Therefore, the owner will agree to sell his

land.
Situation 2
3. A local gardener offered
the mayor for a landscape
that costs Php. 4,900.00 per
10 of land. The budget
officer allotted Php.
75,000.00 for the landscape.
Will the budget be enough?
Justify.
II. After the segment’s construction, the corners
of the land are unoccupied and its area is
unknown, that’s why the Mayor decided to
landscape the unoccupied space.
Solution for 3
Aunoccupied lot= Arectangle-Asegment

Aunoccupied lot= 556.6-381.85 Php. 4,900.00= 10

Aunoccupied lot= 174.75

174.75 75000

17.48(4900)= 85,652 15.306(10)= 153.06

Price of the landscape: Php. 85,652.00 Budget coverage= 153.06

Budget: Php. 75,000.oo Land area= 174.75

Therefore, the budget will not be sufficient enough to cover 174.75 square meters of land.
