THE NECESSITY OF
MACRONUTRIENTS IN
PLANTS
THE NECESSITY OF
MICRONUTRIENTS IN
PLANTS
(NEEDED IN LESS QUANTITY)
CHLORINE
Functions
• osmotic and stomatal regulation, evolution of
oxygen in photosynthesis, and disease
resistance and tolerance

Effect of deficiency:
• plant will wilt
• slower root growth
• leaves undergo chlorosis
• lesser fruit production
CHLORINE

Plant wilting

Chlorosis (a yellowing of
normally green leaves due to a
lack of chlorophyll)
IRON

Functions
• cofactor in chlorophyll synthesis
• important for growth in young plants

Effect of deficiency:
• young leaves become yellowish
MANGANESE
Functions
• activates photosynthesis enzymes
• important for cell respiration and
nitrogen metabolism

Effect of deficiency:
• light brown or grey spots in between
leaf veins
BORON
Functions
• helps the root uptake in calcium ion and
sucrose translocation
• help in germination of protein

Effect of deficiency:
• death of terminal buds and abnormal growth
• leaves become thicker, rolled up and fragile
ZINC

Functions
• for leaf formation
• auxin synthesis (growth hormone)
• cofactor in carbohydrate metabolism

Effect of deficiency:
• stunted growth
COPPER
Functions
• nitrogen metabolism and photosynthesis
• important for growth, reproduction and flower
formation

Effect of deficiency:
• death of young shoots apex
• plants become stunted
• brown spots on terminal leaves
NICKEL
Functions
• component of plant enzyme ---- breakdown of urea to become
ammonia which can be used by plants

Effect of deficiency:
• stunted growth
• reduces crop production
• burnt effect at the end of leaves due to urea accumulation
MOLYBDENUM
Functions
• nitrogen fixation and nitrate reduction during protein synthesis

Effect of deficiency:
• leaf colour becomes pale green
• reduce crop production
KNOP’S SOLUTION
Knop’s solution contains all nutrients including trace
elements needed by healthy plant. Knop’s solution is a
nutrient solution used in growth experiments with higher
plants and containing definite proportions of calcium nitrate,
potassium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, potassium dihydrogen
phosphate, iron (III) Phosphate and distilled water.
