A Research Review on Genetically
Modified Plants
INTRODUCT
ION
Scientists have seen the potential of growing plants
that are able to take up groundwater pollutants
through their roots in order to clean up
contaminated areas since the 90’s.
Phytoremediation uses plants to clean up
contaminated environments. Plants can help clean
up many types of contaminants including metals,
pesticides, explosives, and oil. One of these plants is
the Poplar tree.
The genus Populus contains many fast-growing tree
species that are well suited for phytoremediation
because of their rapid growth, extensive root
systems, high water uptake, and amenability to
transformation.
INTRODUCTION
One limitation with some forms of
phytoremediation is that plants can
move pollutants from the ground and
transpire them unaltered into the air
that is still harmful.
This study reports on the development
of the first transgenic trees with
enhanced phytoremediation
capabilities for removing and degrading
several of the most widespread and
dangerous pollutants from water and
air.
