Chapter 3 - Phonology
Chapter 3 - Phonology
ISO 9001:2015
Phonology
Unit Outcome
− Interpret some linguistic terms in this chapter such as phonemes, phones and
allophones, minimal pairs;
− Phonology is “the study of the abstract side of the sounds of language” whereas
phonetics studies “the actual realizations”. (Peter Roach, 1991)
− Phonology is “the study in which speech sounds form systems and patterns” (Victoria
Fromkin, Robert Rodman, Nina Hyams, 2003)
− The aim of phonology is to discover the principles that govern the way sounds are
organized in languages and to explain the variations that occur.
[t] sound in the words “tea”, “star”, “writer” and “eighth” would be presented in the
same way /ta:/, sta:/, /’raitə/ and /eɪtθ/ => but in real speech they are different.

From phonetics to phonology
The process of substitution one sound for another in a word to see if it makes a difference
is a good way to identify the phonemes of a language.
Quá trình thay thế âm thanh này bằng âm thanh khác trong một từ để xem liệu nó có tạo ra
sự khác biệt hay không là một cách hay để xác định âm vị của một ngôn ngữ.

Phonemes or allophones
“pit” vs. “spit”
[phɪt] [spɪt] => [ph] and [p] are variants of the same underlying sound, the sound /p/.
[ph] and [p] are allophones of the phoneme /p/.
Phoneme (âm vị): contrastive/distinctive sound within a particular language (notation: /…/)
Allophone (also variant) (tha âm vị): sound which counts as an alternative way of saying a phoneme
in a particular language (notation: […])
PHONEMES ALLOPHONES
− are the minimum phonemic units that are not − are predictable variations in pronunciation of
further analyzable into smaller units; a phoneme;
− are the actual phonetic segments produced
by a native speaker;
− are distinctive speech sounds; that is, they − do not lead to a different word if
create meaningful differences in words. substituting one allophone for another
allophone of the same phoneme, just a
different pronunciation of the same word.
− are contrastive − are noncontrastive
Natural Classes
A natural class is class of phonemes characterized by the sharing of a given characterized by the
sharing of a given feature or features.
If the feature is present, we mark it with a plus sign (+) and if it is not present, we use a minus sign (−).
Lớp tự nhiên là lớp các âm vị được đặc trưng bởi sự chia sẻ của một đặc điểm nhất định được đặc trưng
bởi sự chia sẻ của một hoặc nhiều đặc điểm nhất định.
Nếu tính năng này xuất hiện, chúng tôi đánh dấu nó bằng dấu cộng (+) và nếu nó không có, chúng tôi
sử dụng dấu trừ (-).

Distribution
Overlapping Distribution (phân bố chồng chất): The occurrence of sounds in the same
phonetic environments.
+ Contrastive distribution: changing sound changes meaning (minimal pairs)
bat /bæt/ hat /hæt/ cat /kæt/ mat /mæt/
+ Free variations: no distinction in meaning (usually with allophones)

Minimal pairs
Minimal Pairs
A minimal pair is a pair of words that differ in a single phoneme. Minimal pairs are often used to show that two
sounds contrast in a language.
bat /bæt/hat /hæt/cat /kæt/ mat /mæt/
sheep /ʃiːp/ ship /ʃɪp/ shape /ʃeɪp/ shop /ʃɒp/
A minimal set is a group of words can be differentiated by changing one phoneme (always in the same position in
the word).
Three requirements for identifying minimal pairs:
1. only one phoneme different 2. the different phonemes occur in the same phonetic environment. 3. different
in meaning
PRACTICE
Phonotactics is the study of the ways in which phonemes are allowed to combine in a
particular language.
Phonotactic constraints are rules and restrictions concerning the ways in which syllables
can be created in a language
Âm vị học là nghiên cứu về cách kết hợp các âm vị trong một ngôn ngữ cụ thể.
Ràng buộc về mặt ngữ âm là các quy tắc và hạn chế liên quan đến cách thức tạo ra các âm
tiết trong một ngôn ngữ
Example:
1. After Consonants like /b/, /g/, /k/, or /p/ another stop is not permitted.
2. If a word begins with /l/ or /r/, the next letter will be a vowel.
3. No more than three consonants ALLOWED. /s/ + /p, t, k/ + /r, l, w, y/

Stress
Stress: a syllable that is more prominent than the other syllables in the word.
All English words will contain one syllable that has primary stress.
When a word has many syllables, one of them is always pronounced more strongly. This is called word
stress.
homeless /ˈhəʊm.ləs/ concept /ˈkɒn.sept/
The most popular system is to put a vertical line (ˈ) before the stressed syllable in the phonetic
transcription of the word.
Stress
When words are combined into compounds or phrases, one syllable receives greater stress
than all others. Khi các từ được kết hợp thành các từ ghép hoặc cụm từ, một âm tiết sẽ
nhận được trọng âm lớn hơn tất cả các âm tiết khác.
boy + friend = boyfriend /ˈbɔɪ.frend/: a male lover
boy + friend = boy friend /bɔɪ. ˈfrend/: a male friend
White + House = White House /ˈwaɪt ˌhaʊs/: the US president home
white + house = white house /waɪt ˈhaʊs/: the house with white color
We usually DO NOT put the stress mark before the only syllable. Chúng ta thường
KHÔNG đặt dấu nhấn trước âm tiết duy nhất.
pen /ˈpen/ /pen/
Phonemic Rules
Coarticulation refers to changes in speech articulation (acoustic or visual) of the current speech
segment (phoneme or viseme) due to neighboring speech.
− Aspiration − Vowel Lengthening
− Assimilation − Flapping
− Dissimilation − Insertion
− Elision / Deletion
Coarticulation đề cập đến những thay đổi trong cách phát âm giọng nói (âm thanh hoặc hình ảnh)
của đoạn giọng nói hiện tại (âm vị hoặc viseme) do lời nói lân cận.
− Khát vọng − Kéo dài nguyên âm
− Đồng hóa − Vỗ cánh
− Phổ biến − Chèn
− Loại bỏ/Xóa
Aspiration
Voiceless stops [p], [t], [k] are aspirated when they occur as the only thing in the onset of a stressed syllable.
Aspiration is a redundant, non-distinctive feature in English
Các âm tắc vô thanh [p], [t], [k] được bật hơi khi chúng xuất hiện như là thứ duy nhất khi bắt đầu một âm tiết
được nhấn mạnh. Khát vọng là một tính năng thừa, không có gì đặc biệt trong tiếng Anh
Aspirated Not Aspirated
pot [phɒt] spot [spɒt]
top [thɒp] stop [stɒp]
cot [khɒt] Scot [skɒt]
oppose [əˈphəʊz] plop [plɒp]
potato [pəˈtheɪ.təʊ] prop [prɒp]
cat [khæt] twist [twɪst]
tame [theɪm] cube [kjuːb]
kite [khaɪt] lucky [ˈlʌk.i]
pen [phen] hippy [ˈhɪp.i]
Vowel Lengthening
Assimilation is the phenomenon when some aspect of one segment is taken or “copied” by
a neighboring segment. It helps to increase the ease of articulation.
Đồng hóa là hiện tượng khi một số khía cạnh của một phân đoạn được lấy hoặc “sao chép”
bởi phân khúc lân cận. Nó giúp tăng khả năng phát âm dễ dàng.
can go [kæŋ ɡəʊ] don’t be [dəʊm biː]
Some example:
1. /t/ /p/ before /m/, /b/ or /p/ 2. /d/ /b/ before /m/, /b/ or /p/
5. /d/ /g/ before /k/ or /g/ 6. /n/ /ŋ/ before /k/ or /g/
7. /s/ /ʃ/ before /ʃ/ or /j/ 8. /z/ /ʒ/ before /ʃ/ or /j/
Velarization
The dark [ɫ]: When /l/ comes after a vowel and a
consonant or at the final position, the tip of the
tongue need not touch the tooth ridge. The back of
the tongue is raised so that it is near the soft palate.
feel /fiːɫ/ pull /pʊɫ/
pal /pæɫ/ milk /mɪɫk/
Velarization
[ɫ] đậm: Khi /l/ đứng sau một nguyên âm và phụ âm
hoặc ở vị trí cuối cùng, đầu lưỡi không cần chạm
vào sống răng. Phần sau của lưỡi được nâng lên sao
cho gần vòm miệng mềm.
Flapping
Flapping or tapping is a phonological process found in many varieties of English whereby the phoneme /t/ or /d/ is
pronounced as a voiced alveolar flap [ɾ] when the tongue touches the tooth ridge and is quickly pulled back.
Without Flapping Flapping
winter [ˈwɪn.tər] winner [ˈwɪn.ər] [ˈwɪɾ.ər]
latter [ˈlæt.ər] ladder /ˈlæd.ər/ [ˈlæɾ.ər]
Flapping occurs when a /t/ is preceded by a vowel and followed by a vowel and when /d/ occurs between the stressed
and an unstressed vowel.
It only occurs between vowels when the preceding vowel is stressed.
Other rules
Dissimilation is a phenomenon whereby similar consonants or vowels in a word become less similar to the
neighboring segment. Dissimilation is much rarer than assimilation.
fifth /ˈfɪfθ/ [ˈfɪft] sixth /sɪksθ/ [sɪkst]
Insertion is a phenomenon an extra sound is added between two others
hamster /ˈhæm.stər/ [ˈhæmp.stər] prince /prɪns/ [phrɪnts]
Deletion (or Elision) – phonological process in which speech sounds disappear from words.
police /pəˈliːs/ [pliːs] friendship /ˈfrend.ʃɪp/ [ˈfren.ʃɪp]
Other rules
Hoán đổi là một quá trình âm vị học trong đó âm thanh thay đổi vị trí trong cấu trúc âm vị
của một từ
