thought.
Three Causes of Unity Error
(1) Placing unrelated ideas in a sentence

law
• Remedy: (1) putting unrelated ideas in
separate sentences
• (2) Subordinating an idea
• (3) Adding words that show relationship

wearing out.

(2) Excessive Detail
Remedy: If detail is important, put it in a
separate sentence

• So can mixed constructions.
Arranging Sentences for Clarity

instructed not to buy.
• Unparallel constructions, pronouns without
antecedents, and subject-verb disagreements.
Care in Paragraph Design

topic or ideas (unity).
• Unity can vary in breadth. Paragraph unity
concerns a narrow topic.
Keeping Paragraphs Short

than long ones.

• A good practice is to question paragraphs over
12 lines.

paragraphs.
• Placement of the topic sentence depends on
the writer’s plan.
Placement of Topic Sentence
• The topic sentence can come first.

Leaving Out Unnecessary Detail
