DEFINATION
Monolithic drug delivery system is also called as
matrix system
It is defined as a matrix tablet is an important tool for
controlled and sustained release dosage forms called
matrix system.
INTRODUCTION
Monolithic drug delivery system is also called as
matrix system of drug delivery
They also including a some concept of drug delivery
system
Including some system as mentioned below;
Immediate release system
Extended release system
Sustained release system
Modified release system
INTRODUCTION
Matrix system are also called since monolithic the
drug is homogenously disperesd throughout a rate
controlling medium
 e.g.Bees wax,carnauba wax,hydrogenated castor oil.
 the drug dissolve a insoluble matrix of rigid non-
swell able hydrophobic materials or swell able
hydrophilic substance.
A matrix or monolithic consist a inert polymeric
matrix in which a drug uniformly distributed.
Drug can dissolve in the matrix or the drug can be
present as a dispersion .
 matrix may be homogenous or porous with present of
water.
 states of presentation of this from affects the various
release patterns.
Dissolve drug
 dispersed drug
 pours matrix
Hydrophilic matrix
Rigid matrix diffusion
 materials used are insoluble plastics such as a fatty
acid.

 swell able matrix diffusion

 also called glassy hyrogels popular for sustaining the
release of highly water soluble drugs.
ADVANTAGES
Improved patinet compalince
 frequent drug administration
 reduction of fluctuation of drug effect
 maximum utilization of the drug
 increased safety margin of a potent drug
DISADVANTAGES
It is expensive equipment are also required
 if the formulation crushed or chewed, it can slow
release posses toxicity
 drug release rate can be altered
Reduced surface area
Rate of drug release continuously decreased with time
APPLICATION
It is used in pharmaceuticals
It is used in chemical agriculture
 also used in pollutants and additives from photo
resist into environment
They hydrophilic polymer matrix areas widely used in
this system
