Organosilicon compounds
Organo silicon:
 Organo silicon compounds are organo metallic
compounds containing C-Si bonds
 Organosilicon compounds do not occur free in nature
and are prepared synthetically
 Si-C bond is covalent and silicon acts as electrophile.
silicone is more electropositive
 The first organosilicon compound, tetraethylsilane was
prepared by Charles Friedel and James Crafts in 1863
by reaction of tetrachlorosilane with diethylzinc.
Continue:

 Most organosilicon compounds are organic compounds

being colorless, flammable, hydrophobic and stable to
air. Silicon carbide is an inorganic compound
 Silicon has lower electronegativity in compare to C so
Si-C bond is polar in nature which easily attacked by
nucleophile
 Carbon–silicon bonds compared to carbon–carbon
bonds are weaker
Examples:
Preparation:

 By direct process:
In 1940 richard gustav muller
develop a direct method for synthesixing silicones on
industrial scale. In this method methyl chloride react
with silicone then the product is known as demethyl
dichlorosilane

2 CH3Cl + Si → (CH3)2SiCl2
Hydrosilylation:

A second major method for the formation of Si-C

bonds is hydrosilylation (also called hydrosilation)
 In this process, compounds with Si-H bonds
(hydrosilanes) add to unsaturated substrates.
 Hydrosilylation requires metal catalysts, especially
those based on platinum group metals
Reactions:

 Siloxides and siloxanes:

Siloxides are the deprotonated
derivatives of Silanols
R3SiOH + NaOH → R3SiONa + H2O

 Silanols tend to dehydrate to give siloxanes

2 R3SiOH → R3Si-O-SiR3 + H2O
Continue:
 Chloro compounds are the starting material for the
preparation of organosilicon compound
SiCl4 + 3CH3MgCl →3MgCl2 + (CH3)3SiCl
 Chlorotrimethylsilane undergoes halogen exchange with
either lithium iodide in chloroform or sodium iodide in
methyl cyanide
(CH3)3SiCl → (CH3)3SiI + LiCl
 It can also prepared from hexamethyldisilane when this
compound heated with I2 which gives trimethylsilyl
iodide
(CH3)3-Si-Si(CH3)3 + I2 → 2 (CH3)3SiI
Applications:
 Organosilicon compounds are used in the form of
resins, elastomers (rubbery compounds) or oils.
 It is used as an alloying agent for steel
aluminium ,copper and iron
 Resins are organosilicon compounds which is used
in the paint industry
 it can also be applied to drugs of boosting hair
growth and anti-cancer drugs.
 It also used for improving the mechanical properties
of plastics and rubber and waterproof performance.
