Why there are 5 rings
in Olympics?

Africa, Asia, America, Europe and Oceania were


symbolized by the five rings, which represented the five
participating continents at the time.
Colours of Olympics
rings

The five colours of the Olympic rings (Blue, Yellow,


Black, Green and Red) were chosen because every
country in the globe has at least one of these five
colours in their flag.
BADMINTON
Badminton takes its name from
Badminton House—home of the
Duke of Beaufort in the English
county of Gloucestershire.

In 1873, the Duke is credited with bringing


a version of the game—Poona—back from
India and introducing it to his guests.
BADMINTON
The Badminton Federation of
England was created 16 years
later, and in 1899, it organized the
first All England Championships.

Badminton made its debut as a


demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympic
Games in Munich.
KARATE
Karate is an ancient discipline
with the roots of its current form A karate practitioner is called a karateka.
originating on the Japanese island
of Okinawa.
KARATE
Karate comprises of two
modalities: Kumite and Kata.

It became popular across Japan in the 1920s


and expanded internationally following
World War II.
HOCKEY
Hockey is the oldest known ball and
stick game: records exist of it being
played in Persia in 2000 BC.

The first team was the Blackheath


Hockey Club, dating back to 1861. The
Amateur Hockey Association was then
formed in London in 1886. It became an
Olympic sport in 1908.
ROAD CYCLING
Bicycles were first developed in the
mid-18th century and have been a
popular form of transport ever since.

Cycling is among the rare sports that have


always featured on the Olympic
programme. The first road event in
Olympic history took place in 1896 on the
marathon route at the first Games of the
modern era in Athens.
HIGH JUMP
The first recorded high jump
event took place in Scotland in the
19th century.

The high jump is a track and field event in


which competitors must jump unaided over
a horizontal bar placed at measured heights
without dislodging it.
SKATEBOARDING

Skateboarding made its Olympic


debut in Tokyo 2020. Skateboarding
has park and street competitions
which comprises of two rounds:
prelims and finals.
The Paralympic Games or Para-Olympics, also
known as the Games of the Paralympiad, is a series
of international multi-sport events involving
athletes with a range of physical disabilities.
India’s Balbir Singh holds a record of maximum
goals in an Olympic final when he scored 5 goals
in India’s 6-1 win against the Netherlands. The
record is still unbeaten.
Art was a part of the Olympic games until the 1948
Olympics and Chintamoni Kar a sculptor from
West Bengal won a silver medal for Great Britain.
First Indian individual Olympic gold medal
winner – Abhinav Bindra.
Mahatma Gandhi was once a news reporter
covering Olympics in the 1932 edition at Los
Angeles.
