Describing

Motion
Motion is the change in position of an object with
respect to a fixed reference point.
Distance refers to the length of the entire path the
object travelled. It does not always follow a straight
line.
Displacement refers to the shortest distance between
the objects two positions. It shows both distance and
direction. It always follow a straight line.

Displacement can be shorter or equal to the distance

covered by the object but never longer.
Speed is the term used to describe the distance travelled per
unit time. 𝒅

𝒕
Instantaneous Speed is the body’s speed at an instant. It
could be greater, lesser or equal to its average speed.

Average Speed indicates the rate of movement during the

entire time of travel throughout the entire distance travelled.
Velocity is similar to speed bit it does not only tell how
fast the object is moving but it also indicates its
direction.

Speed and distance are scalar quantity while velocity

and displacement are vector quantity.

Scalar Quantity shows only the magnitude while

vector quantity shows both magnitude and direction.
1.The length of the entire path the object travelled.
2. The body’s speed at an instant.
3. The distance travelled per unit time.
4. Change in position of an object with respect to a fixed reference point.
5. The shortest distance between two objects.
6. 10 meters 7. 10 m/s 8. 5 meters, North
9. 5 m/s, South 10. 6 km/hr
TRUE OR FALSE
11. Instantaneous speed is always equal to average speed.
12. Displacement can be equal or greater than distance.
13. Distance and displacement are equal if the object is travelling in a straight path.
14. Unbalanced forces always cause motion.
15. When an object is at rest, there are no forces acting on it.
16-18. effects of forces on an object.
19-20. In a moving object, when can displacement becomes zero
Sample Problem:
1. Find the speed of a truck if it took five hours to
travel a distance of 50 km?

2.If a cat can catch its prey which was 7.5 m away
in 1.85 s. What is the speed of the cat?

3.Solve for the speed of a car traveling a distance

of 31.25 m in 15.4 seconds.
4. Find the speed in m/s of a moving car that
covers a distance of 3.75 km in 0.56 hour.

5. If you walk a distance of 2.5 km in half an

hour. What is your speed in m/s?

6.What is the speed in m/s of an object that

travels a distance of 5.2 km in 360 minutes.
7. Solve for the speed in m/s of an object that
travels 5.4 km in just 90 minutes.

Solve for the speed in m/s of a moving car that:

a. travels a distance of 7.9 m in 35 seconds.
b. covers a distance of 9.6 km. in 45 25 minutes.

walks at a rate of 0f 1.3 m/s, how long will it take
her to reach from their house to the school?
2. How long will it take the bus to travel a
distance of 500 km. if it travel at a rate of 15.7
km/hr?
3. How long will take for a car to cover a distance
of 14 km. if it travels at a rate of 7.3 km per hour?

oval and returns to point A again. What was her distance
travelled? How about the displacement?

to land in Manila at 8:00 am. What should be the speed of
the plane so that it will reach its destination on time if
Manila is 2000 km away from Tacloban.
