EMRO statistics
Children under the age of 5 constitute 12% of the EMRO
region's population

Between 1990 and 2020, under-5 mortality was reduced

by 58% from 102 deaths/ 1000 LBs to 45/1000 LB

Huge disparities in under-5 mortality between countries

and within countries

The Sustainable Development Goals have set targets for

countries to reduce under-5 mortality to 25 per 1000
live births or less by 2030 -

 IMR 56/1000 LB
 U5MR 81/ 1000 LB

 An excess of 25 neonatal, 34 infant and 41 under-five deaths per

1000 live births in the poorest quintile of wealth index compared
with the richest (A.Y. Alam, 2010; (P < 0.0001)

 Children in the richest quintile have an 18% polio 0 vaccination,

19% DPT3 vaccination, 21% HBV3 vaccination and 18% measles
vaccination rates higher than the poorest quintile of wealth index
(A.Y. Alam, 2010; (P < 0.0001)
