THE SCREAM

Emese Sántha
Original piece
• Artist’s name: Edvard Munch
• Title: The Scream
• When and where was it made? The first version was
created in 1893, Norway
• Original context and purpose: Munch intended to express
the intense anxiety and despair he felt, as well as to
convey the universal sense of existential dread
• The figure is genderless and appears to be screaming,
holding its hands to its face. The surroundings are
distorted, the shapes are suggesting a sense of chaos.
• Technique and media: The painting is done in tempera and
crayon on a cardboard
• Dimensions: The original version is 91 x 73.5 cm
My idea
• I would like to make a painting,
however the figure will be
replaced so that it is not
completely the same as the
original artwork. I am aiming to
bring something modern into my
piece by changing the figure,
making it oddly contrasting.
Art piece
• Composition: dynamic, with diagonal
lines creating a sense of movement and
tension
• Space: The space is distorted, with the
bridge in a way that seems flattened and
compressed. There is no clear sense of
depth ---> unease
• Light: harsh shadows, emphasizing the
intense glow of the sky
• Colors: The colors are intense and
vibrant, with warm tones adding to the
sense of emotional intensity. Paint and
crayon were used.
