Abalos: Peace education should be mandatory in
barangays

Department of the Interior and Local
Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos
pledged to bring peace education to the
barangays and its inclusion as one of the criteria
to the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG)
Abalos said he is discussing with the Office
of the Presidential Adviser of Peace,
Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) to make
peace education mandatory in all barangays in
three years’ time through a training program
to be spearheaded by the DILG through the
Local Government Academy (LGA).
“We will win this war! After this seminar, I
will go to the LGA with OPAPRU to conduct
a seminar for all of our barangay and
Sangguniang Kabataan officials after the
election so that this program on peace
education will be on the grassroots,” he said
during the 2nd National Peace Education

of mainstreaming and bringing peace

Meanwhile, Presidential Adviser on Peace,
Reconciliation and Unity Carlito Galvez, Jr. said
that partnerships with national government
agencies such as the DILG can strengthen the goal
to institutionalize peace education in basic and
higher learning institutions nationwide, in
accordance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s
relentless campaign on peace and order.

YOUNG TEEN FEEDS 600 FAMILIES
WITH HYDROPONIC GARDEN
The next generation of eco-warriors are the leaders
in making an impact. Steven Hoffen is no different.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Hoffen was inspired by Sindyanna of Galilee, a
nonprofit organization where Jewish and Arab
women come together to create hydroponic gardens.
Hoffen launched a nonprofit of his own
at just 13 years old called Growing
Peace. Since its launch, Growing Peace
has created four hydroponic gardens
spanning from New York to Tel Aviv.
In Tel Aviv, Growing Peace is focused on
providing 600 families of asylum seekers with
food twice a month, offering over 2,100
servings of food. As a teenager, Steven Hoffen
has been able to bring people together through
food and nature in the most beautiful way,
inspiring generations of people.

When Steven worked on a documentary
about a community organization in Israel
where Muslim and Jewish women
collaborate on projects to foster peace, he
learned about the transformative power of

approach, he founded Growing Peace,
which installs and implements
hydroponic farming systems in
marginalized communities to improve
health, happiness, and welfare while also
addressing local food security
Growing Peace has developed and
installed four gardening systems: one in
Tel Aviv and three in New York City.
The Tel Aviv system feeds up to 600
families of asylum seekers twice a month
with more than 2,100 servings of fresh
food.
The NYC hydroponic towers produce up to
1,800 pounds of yearly produce and more
than 6,300 servings of fruits and vegetables
every year. Growing Peace is working with
Dr. Topeka Sam and the Federal Bureau of
Prisons to install gardens that provide
incarcerated people with healthy food and
Steven’s documentary “Growing
Peace in the Middle East” has been
featured at over 100 film festivals and
received global accolades and awards,
including Best Young Filmmaker at
the Cannes World Film Festival.
