The adjective geothermal comes from the
Greek words ge (earth) and thermos
Geothermal (heat). It covers all techniques used to
Energy recover the heat that is naturally present
in the Earth's subsurface, particularly in
aquifers, the rock reservoirs that contain
groundwater. About half this thermal (or
"heat") energy comes from the residual
heat produced when the planet was
formed 4.5 billion years ago and about
half from natural radioactivity.

temperature to increase with depth in the
Earth and is responsible for melting the
mantle rocks to form magmas. Magmas can
carry the heat upward into the crust.
Groundwater circulating in the vicinity of
igneous intrusions carries the heat back
toward the surface. If this hot water can be
trapped, it can be used directly to heat
homes, or if trapped at great depth under
pressure it can be turned into steam which
will expand and drive a turbine to generate
electricity.

 One requirement for water to become
energy resources is the presence of current.
Hydroelectric Current in streams and rivers is largely
affected by gravity based on the steepness
Energy of slope of the runways and the obstacle
that may hinder the flow.
 The process of converting mechanical
energy from running water to electrical
energy is called hydroelectricity.
 Rivers with high volume of water flowing at
great height possess the best potential to
sources of hydropower.
 Hydropower constitutes the highest energy
percentage (about 6.7%) among the
renewable energy resources.

2 Options for producing Solar power:

Solar Energy 1. Household solar collector – consists

of a black surface placed beneath a
glass plate. The black surface absorbs
sunlight that has passed through the
glass plate ad heats up. The glass
keeps the heat from escaping, so
when water passes through pipes
placed between the glass and the
black surface, the water heats up, it
can then be used as is or to heat a
home.

two wafers of silicon pressed together.

release electrons that flow from one

 The carbon cycle takes many forms.
Carbon helps regulate the amount of
sunlight that enters Earth’s atmosphere.
Biomass It is exchanged through photosynthesis,
decomposition, respiration, and human
activity. Carbon that is absorbed
by soil as an organism decomposes, for
example, may be recycled as a plant
releases carbon-based nutrients into
the biosphere through photosynthesis.
Under the right conditions, the
decomposing organism may
become peat, coal, or petroleum before
being extracted through natural or
human activity.

Coal
 Coal is a combustible black or
brownish-black sedimentary rock
usually occurring in rock strata in
layers or veins called coal beds or coal
seams. The harder forms, such as
anthracite coal, can be regarded as
metamorphic rock because of later
exposure to elevated temperature and
pressure. Coal is composed primarily
of carbon along with variable
quantities of other elements, chiefly
hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

 It is eaten by predators, scavengers or bacteria.

 Through exposure to ambient air or oxygen-rich water, it oxidizes. That means that the hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur
and phosphorus contained in the matter combine with oxygen atoms present in the air. The organic matter breaks down
into water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrates, sulfates and phosphates that nourish new plants.

Nuclear power plants
Nuclear power plants are a type of power plant that use the
process of nuclear fission in order to generate electricity.
They do this by using nuclear reactors in combination with
the Rankine cycle, where the heat generated by the reactor
converts water into steam, which spins a turbine and
a generator. Nuclear power provides the world with around
11% of its total electricity, with the largest producers being
the United States and France.
