Hungary is a state in Central Europe, in the middle of the Carpathian Basin. Parliamentary republic since 1989. It is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Romania to the east and southeast, Serbia to the south, Croatia and Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west. Its population fell below 10 million in the 21st century. Its capital and most populous city is Budapest. Topography: Most of the country's territory lies at an altitude of less than 200 meters above sea level. There are many central mountains in Hungary, the elevations exceeding 300 meters in height occupy less than 2% of the country's territory. Its highest point is Kékes with an altitude of 1014 m, and the lowest point is south of Szeged in the part called Gyálarét Lúdvár on the right bank of the Tisza at an altitude of 75.8 m above sea level.
