CHAPTER 3

LESSON 2: TEACHING AS VOCATION, MISSION AND PROFESSION

 At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:

1 define a vocation, a mission, and a profession

2
explain what is meant by teaching as a vocation, mission, and
profession;

3
describe teaching through acrostic poem
Teaching as Vocation

• vocation comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means to

call.

• based on the etymology of the word, vocation, therefore, means

a call. If there is a call, there must be a caller and someone who
is called. There must also be a response.

• means it is a strong calling or a deep sense of purpose. It's like

feeling that teaching is what you were meant to do, like it's your
destiny.
Example

Teacher Mark is treated as a teacher for teaching his students the lessons
every day. He teaches everything he knows, showing off his
mastery of the subject, but not even considering the feelings of
his students towards difficult topics. On the other hand, a
volunteer named Joy is addressed as a teacher for teaching and serving
the children of a far rural community. She travels almost 20 kilometers
every day for the sake of her students learning and development.
Teaching as Mission

• teaching is also a mission.

• the word mission comes from the Latin word "misio" which
means "to send". You are called to be a teacher and sent into the
world to accomplish a mission, to teach.

• The Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines a mission as

"task assigned. You are sent to accomplish an assigned task.
Teaching as Mission

• is about seeing it as a mission, like a goal or a quest. It's about

believing that you have an important role to play in educating others
and making a positive impact on their lives.

• teaching, is your mission means it is the task entrusted to you in this

world. If it is your assigned task then naturally you've got to prepare
yourself for it.
Example

Imagine a teacher going to a village where kids don't have schools. The
teacher sets up a little classroom under a tree and starts teaching the kids
how to read and write. Every day, the teacher helps them learn new
things, like how to count or how to tell stories. Soon, the kids can read
signs, write letters, and understand more about the world. The teacher
feels happy because they're helping the kids have a better future.
Teaching as Profession

• means treating it like a job or a career.

• it involves being trained and skilled in teaching, and earning a

living from it.

• it's like any other profession where you have responsibilities,

standards, and expectations to meet.

• is about inspiring and motivating students to realize and exceed

their potential.
Example

A teacher goes to school every day to help students learn. They stand in
front of the class and explain things like math, reading, and science.
They make learning fun by playing games and doing activities. The
teacher cares about each student and wants them to do well in life. They
spend time preparing lessons and grading papers to help students
improve. Teaching is their job, and they do it because they love to help
kids learn and grow.
Direction: Each group will describe teaching through making an
acrostic poem using the words VOCATION, MISSION, AND
PROFESSION. Then after that present your work. (10 minutes)

• G- 1 Vocation
• G-2 Mission
• G-3 Profession
