• 1. must & have to = มันสำคัญ มันจำเป็ น ที่จะต้องทำ
I must quit smoking. ฉันต้องเลิกสูบบุหรี่
I have to quit smoking. ฉัน(จำเป็ น)ต้องเลิกสูบบุหรี่
สองประโยคนี้แปลว่า ต้องเลิกสูบบุหรี่ เหมือนกัน แต่เราจะใช้must ในกรณีที่เราคิดว่าสิ่งนั้นจำเป็ นต้อง
ทำ เป็ นความเชื่อหรือเป็ นความคิดของเราเองที่คิดว่ามันจำเป็ นต้องทำ
แต่ have to นั้นใช้ในกรณีที่สถานการณ์เป็ นตัวบังคับให้เราจำเป็ นต้องทำ ซึ่งบางที่เราอาจจะไม่อยากทำ
อาจจะเป็ นกฎ หรือข้อบังคับให้ทำ เช่น
• 2. don’t have to = ไม่ต้อง ไม่จำเป็ นต้องทำ
• 3. should & ought to = ควรจะทำ (ปัจจุบันไม่นิยม ought to แล้วจะยังมีอยู่บ้างใน writing )
• 4. shouldn’t = ไม่ควร

• "Cannot" or "can't" is used talk about what someone is not able to do...

"I can't lift that box because it's too heavy."

something that is not possible...

"We can't go to the library because it's closed today."

or something that is not allowed...

"You can't smoke in this restaurant."

"Must not" is used to show that you shouldn't do something, for example because it is very important, because it is a rule, or dangerous...

"You must not let Grandpa lift that box because he has a bad back."

"You must not eat those berries because they are poisonous."

"Passengers must not talk to the bus driver."

or to show that something is very illogical(ไม่สมเหตุสมผล) or very unlikely to be true...

"That girl must not go to our school because I've never seen her before."
 had better ใช้อย่างไร
คำว่า had better มีความหมายว่า “ควรจะ…ดีกว่า” มีลักษณะการใช้เหมือนกับ modal verb เลยค่ะ
ซึ่งถ้าพูดถึง modal verb คำว่า had better ก็จะมีความหมายคล้ายๆกับคำว่า should หรือ ought to
นั่นแหละค่ะ ซึ่งหลักการใช้ก็เหมือนกันคือจะต้องตามด้วย Verb รูปธรรมดาไม่ผัน
had better + V.infinitive (ไม่ผัน) เช่น
It’s getting dark. We’d better go back home.
เริ่มจะมืดแล้ว พวกเราควรจะกลับบ้านกันดีกว่านะ
**ไม่ต้องสงสัยนะคะว่า ’d better คืออะไร เพราะเราใช้รูปย่อของ had เป็ น ’d ค่ะ

** ซึ่ง had better ก็มักจะใช้คู่กับคำว่า มิฉะนั้น ไม่เช่นนั้นหรือภาษาบ้านๆก็คือ ไม่งั้น ไม่อย่างงั้น เช่น เธอน่าจะ
ทำแบบนั้นแบบนี้ ควรจะทำอย่างนั้นอย่างนี้ ไม่อย่างงั้นนะ…… พอจะนึกภาพออกมั้ยคะ มาดูตัวอย่างกันค่ะ
You had better study for exam, or you’ll fail.
เธอน่าจะไปอ่านหนังสือสอบดีกว่านะ ไม่งั้นเธออาจจะสอบตกได้
We had better get back to work or else our boss will be angry with us.
พวกเราควรจะกลับไปทำงานได้แล้ว ไม่อย่างงั้นเจ้านายโกรธแน่ๆ

แล้วถ้าเป็ นประโยคปฏิเสธล่ะ ทำอย่างไร?? เราก็ใส่ not ลงไป หลัง had better ค่ะ
ฟังดีๆนะคะ!! ใส่หลัง had better นะคะ ไม่ใช่ใส่หลัง had เพราะบางคนอาจจะคิดว่าน่าจะเหมือน past
perfect ที่ใส่หลัง had เป็ น had not หรือ hadn’t เช่น
They had betternot go out tonight. It’s really cold outside.
พวกเราไม่ควรจะออกไปข้างนอกหรอกคืนนี้ ข้างนอกนั่นมันหนาวมากๆ
You had betternot go alone. It’s quite dark.
คุณไม่ควรจะไปคนเดียว มันค่อนข้างมืด
**** ควรทำทั่วไปใช้should, เจาะจงกับเหตุการณ์นั้นๆใช้had better
• ***อาจจะสงสัยว่า had better มีความหมายเหมือนกับ should และ
ought to สามารถใช้แทนกันได้มั้ย? ใช้ได้ค่ะ แต่ก็อาจจะมีจุดที่ต่างกัน
เล็กน้อยคือ ถ้าใช้had better จะให้ความรู้สึกที่รีบเร่งกว่าการใช้should
หรือ ought to เช่น
• You don’t look well today. You’d better go to see the doctor.
วันนี้คุณดูอาการไม่ดีเลยคุณน่าจะไปหาหมอนะ (ซึ่งบ่งบอกว่าให้รีบไป)
• ข้อแตกต่างอีกอย่างนึงก็คือ การใช้had better จะเป็ นการให้คำแนะนำที่
ถ้าไม่ทำตามอาจจะเกิดผลร้ายตามมา ในขณะที่ should กับ ought to
เป็ นการให้คำแนะนำในสถานการณ์ทั่วๆไป เช่น
• You should brush your teeth twice a day.
แต่ก็สามารถใช้แทนกันได้ไม่ผิดนะค้า ^
 Writing
• In these days, There are a lot of brands in this big world, which is interesting and
exciting. Different people like different brand. Now I am going to write about my
favorite brands.
• My first favorite brand is Pentel. It is a brand of stationaries. The reason why I like
this brand is because the products are good quality and easy to use. I always use
this brand.
• My second favorite brand is AfterYou. They sell food, which the best food in my
opinion is Bingsu and honey toast. They are very delicious so I love it. I always
order it when I go to AfterYou.
• Finally, There are a lot of brands in this world, but My favorite brands are Pentel
and AfterYou. You can like one or two or more brands. It’s up to you. What about
you?
