BURNS

DEFINITION:
• Burn as a wound caused by exogenous agent leading to coagulative
necrosis of the tissue.
• A burn is a type of injury to skin, or other tissues, caused by heat,
cold, electricity, chemicals, friction, or radiation. Most burns are due
to heat from hot liquids, solids, or fire
EFFECTS OF BURN ARE INFLUENCED
BY:
• THE BURNS ARE INFLUENCED BY THE:
• 1.Intensity of the energy
• 2.Duration of exposure
• 3.Type of tissue injured
CLASSIFICATION OF BURNS:

• First degree—injury localised to the epidermis


• Superficial second degree—injury to the epidermis and superficial
papillary dermis
• Deep second degree—injury through the epidermis and deep up to
reticular dermis
• Third degree—full-thickness injury through the epidermis and
dermis into subcutaneous fat
• Fourth degree—injury through the skin and subcutaneous fat into
underlying muscle or bone
SYSTEMIC ALTERATIONS
SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT:
• The following factors assessed when examining a burn injury and burn injury
site:
• Inhalation injury
• Total Body Surface Area (TBSA)
• Burn Type and Depth
• Burn Site and Impact
• Present History
• Any surgical or medical management
• Past History (Including Medical/ Drug)
• Social History
OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT:
• When conducting an objective assessment we look at
• Pain Intensity Assessment
• Burn Outcome Measures
• Inhalation Assessment
• Oedema Assessment
• Physical Assessment
MEDICAL TREATMENT:
• Water based treatment
• Fluids to prevent dehydration
• Pain and anxiety medication
• Burn creams and ointment
• Dressings
• Drugs that fight infection
• Tetanus shot
PHYSICAL THERAPY:
• Sure, here are five key points in physical therapy management for burn
patients:
• 1. Range of motion exercises: Prevent contractures and maintain joint
flexibility.
• 2. Wound care and scar management: Improve scar pliability and reduce
pain.
• 3. Strength and conditioning: Build muscle strength and endurance.
