FACTORS AFFECTING POOR RETENTION AMONG THE STUDENTS

OF SAN RAFAEL STAND ALONE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL :

A QUALITATIVE STUDY
Abstract
The present study investigate the factors affecting poor student retention of SHS
students at San Rafael Stand Alone Senior High School. Utilizing semi-structured
questions for data gathering verbatim and the researchers employed thematic and
coding to conclude. The findings reveals that effective class discussions, addressing
grading concerns and proactive learning strategies are the factors that affected the
student’s retention. The researchers recommends that class discussions should be
more focus and detailed to the topics, prioritize clarity and accessibility in educational
materials and highlighted the importance the significance of proactive learning
strategies to overcome future challenges specifically poor student retention. Given the
complex factors affecting student retention, more research is needed to better
understand the factors affecting student retention among Senior High School
Students.

• The student poor retention in education is one of the major problem
that need to be addressed specifically finding out the factors affecting
it.
• It is very significant to know the factors affecting and its effects to
address it properly depending on the outcome of this study. It is very
important to identify the risk of achieving greater and academic
success of a school.

• The main purpose of the study is to find out the factors Affecting Poor Retention
Among the Students of San Rafael Stand-Alone Senior High School, for the school
yearP 2023-2024.
ROBLEM
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the factors that could affect the poor retention among the students of
San Rafael Stand-Alone Senior High School?
2. What are the effects of poor retention to the students and to the school as a
whole?
3. What are the ways and means to address poor retention among the students?
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
• Student retention has been a significant problem since the 1970s,
according to Alan Seidman, head of the US-based Center for the Study of
College Student Retention, things have improved somewhat despite
significant financial investments and program development.
• Tinto stressed that to take retention seriously is to take education itself
seriously.
• Elsewhere (1997), he emphasizes the importance of the classroom as
"the crossroads where the social and the academic meet
• Family pressures can also cause problems, for example unexpected
pregnancy and having to care for a sick relative.
METHODOLOGY

• The study was conducted at San Rafael Stand Alone Senior High School,
San Rafael, Maasin City.
• Fifteen students from grades 11 and 12 of different strand were
interviewed using a semi structured interview guide with three
questions.
• The researchers secured a permit to conduct the study from the school
head of San Rafael Stand-Alone Senior High School. The response of the
students was audio recorded for the data of this study. After gathering
the data, the researchers collected and made transcription of the
gathered responses.
