THE SCIENCE BEHIND KONARK SUN
TEMPLE
Temples in Odisha, like that of the Sun temple (Konark), Jagnath temple (Puri), Ekamra kshetra (Bhubaneshwar), are
standouts in the world of ancient, architecture. What makes Odisha’s temple architecture remarkable, however, is the science
behind the architecture. The Konark Sun temple is an excellent example where the sun god was worshipped at the centre of
the mandala. The placement of the temple and the sun god had been aligned in such a way that the first ray of the sun from
the coast would cross the dancing hall and would fall and reflect from the diamond, placed at the crown of Sun God. The
twelve pairs of wheels situated at the base of the temple signifies the wheels of chariot, and the spokes of the wheels form a
sundial – allowing people to calculate precise time by just looking at the shadow cast by these spokes. The art of construction
of a temple was scientifically designed and passed from generation to generation. Though the temples vary across regions,
the basic structure remains the same and is derived from a single idea of design. Another unique feature of this temple is the
presence of an iron plate in between every two stones. Massive iron beams have also been used to construct the higher floors
of the temple. A 52-ton magnet was used to create the peak of the main temple. It is said that the entire structure has tolerated
the harsh conditions especially of the sea because of this magnet. Previously, the unique arrangement of the main magnet
along with the other magnets caused the main idol of the temple to float in air. Moreover, the temple presents a way to teach
mortality. The Konark Sun temple has two huge lions on either side of the entrance. Each line is shown crushing an elephant.
Beneath each elephant lies the human body. Lion represents money. By looking at them it becomes clear that how both these
flaws can crush a human being.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND MARATHA
TEMPLE
• Maratha temples, built between the mid-seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries in Maharashtra
(Western India), were influenced by the preceding traditions of Hindu temple architecture of the
Yadavas and the religious and secular buildings of Deccani Sultanates and Mughals. The Ganesh
temple complex at Tasgaon in southwest Maharashtra is representative of the high point that the
Maratha temple tradition had attained in the late-eighteenth century. The temple was constructed in
a period that coincides with Maratha political ascendancy and economic prosperity, and its form and
composition represents the fullest development of the Maratha architectural style. The roof spires
over the temple’s five shrine sanctuary and the gopura tower over the entrance gateway represent
an interplay of preceding architectural traditions, economic prosperity, eclectic architectural
influences, and the lifestyle aspirations of the patron. Misunderstood architectural tradition, and
establishes the Marathas as the robust patrons of art and architecture despite the tumulyous
political conditions in Maharashtra.
