• The University of North Carolina was the first public university in the

nation. In 1789, William Richardson Davie wrote the act that


established the University. In 1793, he and fellow trustees laid the
cornerstone of the first building, Old East. Students arrived in 1795,
and UNC became the only public university to award degrees in the
18th century.

academic year, the UNC System welcomed a record-setting class this
fall. This marks the third year in a row that the University has reached
record-high enrollment.
• There are now 242,464 students enrolled across the UNC System —
an increase of 1 percent compared to 2019’s enrollment of 239,981.
Undergraduate enrollment is up 0.2 percent, while graduate enrollment
increased by 4 percent.

North Carolina.[5][6] UNC campuses conferred 43,686 degrees in 2008–
