2024 Motion in straight line

Starter/bell work: Can you sketch a displacement- Learning Hive skills:

time graph of your morning, from when you woke

up until now? Learning Objective: To
investigate motion in
straight line.
Challenge: Now can you draw a velocity-time graph Success criteria:
 Use your knowledge
for the same situation? to distinguish
between distance
and displacement
and speed and
velocity.
 Draw and interpret
displacement-time
and velocity-time
graphs.
 Solve exam
questions.

Linear Motion
What do you know
about acceleration?
Defining Acceleration
If displacement is an objects distance
from its starting position in a certain
direction then:

Velocity = Change in Displacement / Change in Time

or:

Where velocity is given by v,

displacement is given by s, and
time is given by t.
Defining Acceleration
We have:

Acceleration is then given by

Where acceleration is given by a,

velocity is given by v,
and time is given by t.

Distance vs Displacement

ent
Displacement is distance moved in a stated direction.

Displacement Time Graphs
Draw a
displacement
time graph
An ice hockey puck remains stationary
for three seconds. It then travels a
distance of 50m in 1 second away from
its original position. It is stopped for
another second and then moves a
distance of 20m in five seconds in the
same direction as before.
Displacement Time Graphs
Draw a
displacement
time graph
A bird flies north for thirty miles and
takes two hours. The bird stops to rest
for three hours. The bird then flies
south for forty miles for four hours,
turns back north and flies for another
ten miles in an hour.
Displacement - Time graph

each section and use the
30 results to plot a velocity-
time graph.
