2024 SUVAT equations

Starter/bell work: At which point(s): Learning Hive skills:

a) Does its velocity start increasing? A, D

b) Does its velocity start decreasing? B
c) Does the object start moving backwards? B Learning Objective: To
investigate motion in
straight line.
Displacement Success criteria:
 Draw and interpret
B displacement-time
and velocity-time
 graphs.
E  Apply suvats.
A 0  Solve exam
C Time questions.

D
For distance/displacement-time graph:
Gradient - velocity
Horizontal - stationary
Straight diagonal - constant velocity
curved diagonal - acceleration

For speed/ velocity-time graph:

Gradient - acceleration
Area under - distance/displacement
Horizontal -constant velocity
Straight diagonal - constant acceleration
curved diagonal - changing acceleration

If this is a graph of a rocket, when does it stop?

SUVAT Equations
The SUVAT equations are used in situations where
there is CONSTANT ACCELERATION.
SYMBOL QUANTITIES and SI UNITS
s: Distance Displacement (m)
t: Time (s)
a: Acceleration (ms-2)
u: Speed at start/ Velocity at start (ms-1)
v: Speed at end/ Velocity at end (ms-1)
If you DON'T need to know the direction of the motion, you can use
distance and speed, if you do need to know the DIRECTION, you have to
use displacement and velocity.

Linear Motion 2

S – Displacement.
U – Initial Velocity. What do the letters
V – Final Velocity. in SUVAT mean?
A – Acceleration.
T – Time.

We have four equations to describe motion with constant acceleration.

𝑣=𝑢+𝑎𝑡 1
𝑠=𝑢𝑡+ 𝑎 𝑡

𝑠=
𝑢+ 𝑣

𝑣 =𝑢 +2𝑎𝑠
