2024 Projectile Motion

Starter/bell work: Should the boy Learning Hive skills:

aim at the target, below the target or

above the target? Why?
Should the
hunter aim at
the monkey,
below the
monkey or
above the
monkey?
What happens if an object is moving in more than one
direction?

You need to deal with the vertical and

horizontal components separately!!!
Worked example:
A cricket ball is thrown with a velocity of 36ms at an angle of 39 to the
-1 o

horizontal.
a) What height above the throwing point does it reach?
b) How long will it take to fall back to the level at which it was thrown?
c) What horizontal distance will it travel during this time?
vertical component = 36sin39 = 22.7ms
o -1

horizontal component = 36cos39 = 28ms

o -1

39 o
At the top of the arc, the vertical speed is zero and the distance, s, is the maximum
displacement. The acceleration is due to gravity.
Use: v = u + 2as
2 2

0 = 22.7 +(2 x (-9.81) x s)

2 2

19.6s = 515.3
s = 26.3m
This is for the whole arc, so the vertical displacement will be zero
Use: s = ut + 1/2at 2

0 = 22.7t + 1/2(-9.81t ) (divide throughout by t)

2

t = 4.63s
The horizontal velocity doesn't change, so you can just use:
Distance = speed x time
= 28 x 4.63
= 129.6m

2. Broken Cannon Question
1. Ball thrown
off a cliff

A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of a vertical cliff. The cliff is
50 m high and the ball lands 60 m from the bottom of the cliff.
a. How long does it take for the ball to reach the bottom of the cliff?
b. What is the horizontal speed of the ball?
c. What is the vertical speed of the ball as it lands?

In 2D motion, the horizontal component of the
speed is:

A) Constant C) Decelerating
B) Accelerating D) Zero

The horizontal component
of the velocity will be:

A) uo cosθ
Β) uo sinθ
C) uo tanθ

To find the magnitude of the resultant velocity before
impact I must do the following calculation:

A) vv + vH
2 2

B) tan θ = vv/vH
-1

C) vv - vH
2 2

D) tanθ = vH/vv

Keywords: projectile, SUVATs, vertical, horizontal

To find the maximum height of the ball I must do:
A) Suvats for the horizontal motion
B) Distance = Speed x Time for the vertical motion
C) SUVATs for the vertical motion
D) Distance = Speed x Time for the horizontal motion

Keywords: projectile, SUVATs, vertical, horizontal

To find the time of travel of the ball I must:
A) Do SUVATs for the vertical motion.
B) Do SUVATs for the vertical motion and double the time I find.

The cannon ball takes 1 second to reach the ground. This
means that its final vertical velocity is:

A) 9.81 m/s
B) 96.2 m/s
C) 4.91 m/s
D) 1 m/s

The cannonball is fired with a velocity of 2 m/s.
It takes 10 seconds to reach the ground.
This means that:
A) It will have travelled 20 m horizontally
B) It will have travelled 20 m vertically
C) Its resultant velocity (horizontal and vertical) will always be 2 m/s
D) It doesn't accelerate

Keywords: projectile, SUVATs, vertical, horizontal

To find the time the cannon ball travels in this problem, I would
have to:
A) Do SUVATs twice for the vertical motion, one from the
cannonball until it reaches maximum height, and then another
from maximum height until it reaches the ground
B) Do SUVATs with u = 19.6 m/s and v = -49 m/s

B) 1/2 m (vT) 2

C) Both are the same
