Directions: Read and analyze the
problem below.

Charlie’s Candies
Charlie bought 12 candies and pay
Php 20.00 for it. Orange flavored
candies cost Php 1.00 each and mint
candies cost Php 2.00 each. Find the
number of orange flavored candies and
mint candies he bought.
Steps in problem-solving: (Polya’s
Approach)

1. Understand the problem.

2. Develop a plan (Translate).
3. Carry out the plan (Solve).
Step 1: Understand the problem.

Let
x = number of orange flavored candies
y = mint candies
Step 2: Develop a plan (translate).

For equation 1: Charlie bought 12 candies.

For equation 2: Orange flavored candies cost

Php 1.00 each and mint candies cost Php 2.00
each and it cost him Php 20.00.
Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).

Use one of the methods for solving systems of

equations.

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟏𝟐
𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒚 =𝟐𝟎
Using
graphing
(𝟒 ,𝟖)
method
𝒙+
𝟐𝒚
𝒙 =𝟐
+𝒚 𝟎
=
𝟏
𝟐
Using substitution method

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 =𝟏𝟐
𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒚 =𝟐𝟎
• Transform into y in terms of x.
• Substitute in the 2nd equation.
• To solve for y, substitute the value of x in
the 1st equation.

Therefore, there are 4 orange flavored

candies and 8 mint candies.
Using elimination method

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 =𝟏𝟐
𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒚 =𝟐𝟎
• To solve for x,
- substitute the value of y
in the 1st equation.
− 𝒚 =− 𝟖
𝒚 =𝟖
Illustrative Example 1: (Age Problem)

The sum of Janna’s age and

Mark’s age is 40. Two years ago,
Janna was twice as old as Mark.
Find Janna’s age now.
Step 1: Understand the problem.

Let
x = Janna’s age
y = Mark’s age
Step 2: Develop a plan (translate).

For equation 1: The sum of Janna and Mark’s

age is 40.

For equation 2: Two years ago, Janna was

twice as old as Mark.
Janna (two years ago)= 2 times Mark’s age (two years ago)
Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).

Use one of the methods for solving systems of

equations.

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟒𝟎
𝒙 − 𝟐 𝒚 =− 𝟐
Using elimination method

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟒𝟎
𝒙 − 𝟐 𝒚 =− 𝟐
• To solve for x,
- substitute the value of y
in the 1st equation.
𝟑 𝒚 = 𝟒𝟐
𝒚 =𝟏𝟒

Therefore, Janna’s age is 26.

Illustrative Example 2: (Number Problem)

The sum of two numbers is 10.

The larger number is 8 more than
the smaller number. Find the two
numbers.
Step 1: Understand the problem.

Let
x = larger number
y = smaller number
Step 2: Develop a plan (translate).

For equation 1: The sum of two numbers is 10.

For equation 2: The larger number is 8 more

than the smaller number.
Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).

Use one of the methods for solving systems of

equations.

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 =𝟏𝟎
𝒙 = 𝒚 +𝟖
Using substitution method

{ 𝒙 + 𝒚 =𝟏𝟎
𝒙 = 𝒚 +𝟖
• Notice that in equation 2, x is expressed in terms
of y. You can substitute x with y+8 in equation 1.
• To solve for x, substitute the value of y in
the 1st equation.

Therefore, the larger number is 9 and the

smaller number is 1.
Assignment
