Types of Cell Transport
Passive Transport
Cell doesn’t use energy to move molecules into or out of the cell
1. Diffusion
2. Osmosis
Active Transport
Cell does use energy to move items into and out of the cell
Cell doesn’t Use energy to move molecules into or out of the cell
1. Diffusion
2. Osmosis
3. Facilitated Diffusion
Active Transport
4. Protein Pumps
5. Endocytosis
6. Exocytosis
Passive Transport
• cell uses no energy
(High to Low)
Examples of Solutes
● Sugar dissolved into water
● Salt dissolved into water
Hypotonic Solution
Result:
Water moves from the solution to inside the cell
-Cell swells and bursts open
Hypertonic Solution
Hypertonic: The solution has a higher concentration of solutes and a lower
concentration of water than inside the cell. (High solute; Low water)
Result:
Water moves from inside the cell into the solution
-Cell shrinks
Isotonic Solution
Isotonic: The concentration of solutes in the solution is equal to the concentration
of solutes inside the cell. (=)
Result:
Water moves equally in both directions and the cell remains same size!
Active Transport- Endocytosis and Exocytosis
Endocytosis- taking bulky material
into a cell
• Uses energy
• “cell eating”
