COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the course, students should be able to:


- Understand the terms and fundamental concepts used
in the study of cultural and intercultural communication.
- Enhance the intercultural competence in communicating
with people from different cultural heritages; solve
cultural conflicts, avoid discrimination and prejudice in
intercultural communication; and thus communicate
successfully in different cultures.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the course, students should be able to:


- Compare and contrast behaviors, values, religions, beliefs
among various cultures.
- Understand values and differences of other cultures; thus have
proper behaviors and attitudes towards different cultures.
Besides, this course helps students overcome cultural barriers;
communicative successfully and effectively in different cultural
contexts; and more importantly feel desired to do further
researches on languages and cultures in the world.

and differences in the nature of cultures.

appropriateness of behaviors in the process of
intercultural communication.

BRIEF COURSE CONTENT

• This course consists of 8 chapters, presented in 3 main


parts, providing students with fundamental concepts of
intercultural communication. The course commences by
presenting basic notions of communication and
intercultural communication (chapters 1, 2, & 3), and
then proceeds to analyze the differences of various
cultures (chapters 4, 5, & 6). The course concludes with
a discussion of verbal and non-verbal communication
(chapters 7 & 8).

STUDENT’S TASKS

Students are required to:

• attend at least 80% of all class meetings


• have good behavior in studying
• participate actively in class activities and discussions
• have read in advance the required materials before
every class meeting.
• complete all assignments on time.
