Focus on US
• The stock market closed higher, with inflation becoming the focus: As the market
digested the latest batch of US inflation data, most stocks rose. The S&P 500 index rose
by 0.5%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq index rose by over 0.7%. Small-cap stocks
outperformed large caps today, with the Russell 2000 index closing up by over 1%.
• Inflation data higher than expected: Overall PPI in April was higher than expected, rising
by 0.5% month-on-month, compared to a widespread expectation of a 0.3% increase.
Excluding the volatile food and energy components, core PPI unexpectedly rose by 0.5%
month-on-month, compared to an expectation of a 0.2% increase. However, the
unexpected rise in PPI was largely due to downward revisions to March data.
• Strong corporate earnings support the stock market: Strong corporate profit growth has
played a key role in the recent strength of the stock market.
Focus on India
By 2025, India will surpass Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy.
Currently, India ranks fifth in terms of GDP, trailing only behind the United
States, China, Germany, and Japan, having surpassed the United Kingdom in
2022.
Just a decade ago, India's GDP ranked eleventh globally. Currently, India's GDP
is estimated to be around $3.7 trillion. Some highlights of India's journey from
the Fragile Five in 2013 to one of the top five economies in the world in 2024
include record collection of goods and services tax, GDP growth exceeding 8%
for the past three quarters, inflation under control with the Indian rupee traded in
27 countries.

Market Outlook
So far in May, continued selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) has
resulted in total sales reaching 335.4 billion rupees, while continued buying
by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) has led to total purchases reaching
265 billion rupees. Due to the balance between FII selling and DII buying, the
market, despite significant fluctuations, has not undergone major changes.
The Nifty has only declined by 0.25% over the past month. Foreign investors
continue to sell in India. The current market volatility is attributed to election
uncertainty, as elections have a significant impact on the market due to the
close scrutiny of election results. In elections, emotions tend to influence
everyone to some extent. Investors worldwide often dislike uncertainty, and
election results are uncertain.
• You can take a look at the Forbes list and notice that many of the wealthiest
individuals primarily derive their wealth from the equity value of the companies they
have listed. Participating in primary market IPOs, in fact, means investing in equity.
The wealth accumulation brought about by this method is unmatched by other
investment methods. The billionaires on the Forbes list all know that investing in
equity in the primary market is the most profitable way. All we need to do is follow
suit.

Trend is the fundamental concept of Dow Theory Short-term fluctuations

B
Primary Trend
C Primary Trend
1 3
Secondary Trend
The three key movements in market trends are the core of Dow Theory.
Secondary Trend
It's a counter-trend movement opposite to the primary trend, interrupting the primary
trend. In a bull market, it's an intermediate decline or "correction," while in a bear
market, it's an intermediate rise or rebound. Typically, in a bull market, it retraces one-
third to two-thirds of the upward primary trend.
However, it's important to note that the one-third to two-thirds principle is not set in
stone. It's just a simple explanation of probabilities. Most secondary trends fall within
this range, with many stopping close to the halfway point. Fewer fall below one-third
of the previous rally, while some almost completely erase the previous gains.
Short-term fluctuations
They are just brief fluctuations, seldom lasting more than three weeks,
typically less than six days. Although they may seem insignificant on
their own, they add a mysterious and volatile aspect to the overall
development of the primary trend. Usually, whether it's the primary
trend or the portion between two secondary trends, it consists of a
series of three or more distinct short-term fluctuations. Inferences
drawn from these short-term changes can easily lead in the wrong
direction. In a market, mature or not, short-term fluctuations are the
only aspects that can be "manipulated," whereas the primary and
secondary trends are beyond manipulation.
However, there is still the possibility of losses even in this scenario. Therefore, before
taking a position, one should plan their bottom line for both losses and profits. In the
long run, a high probability of profitable trades can compensate for occasional losses.
