D. ATTRIBUTES AND CORE
VALUES OF A NURSE IN
PSYCHIATRIC
MENTAL HEALTH PRACTICE
According toMedical Health
News, a psychiatric nurse is “a
specially trained professional
who cares for the
psychological and physical
well-being of patients with
WHAT IS A
mental health conditions or
PSYCHIATRIC behavioral
NURSE? problems.”
She should have her own beliefs and
values related to life and should be able
to acknowledge and accept her own
feelings and their influence on her
behavior. She should have the ability to
recognize when she is under stress and
its influence on her physical and mental
performance, and also find ways to get
an adequate release from it. Until the
nurse is able to cope with personal fears
and anxieties in relation to psychiatric
SELF-AWARENESS nursing, it is unlikely that she can have a
AND SELF- therapeutic influence on the patient’s
ACCEPTANCE environment
The ability to talk therapeutically
with patients requires an attitude of
acceptance, tolerance, and genuine
interest in the patient. The basis of
all helping relationships is
acceptance which implies that the
nurse treats the patient as an
important person and not as a
diagnostic entity or a set of
ACCEPTING psychiatric symptoms.
THE
PATIENT
Studying patient’s
behavior pattern
Allowing him to make his own
choices and decisions as far
as possible.
Being aware of his likes
and dislikes
Being honest with him
ACTIVE LISTENING
SINCERE INTEREST
She should convey to the patient
that she is available not only to
meet his physical care
requirements but also to assist
him in dealing with his
psychological needs.

BEING AVAILABLE
Empathy is an important tool
in understanding other’s
feelings.
Empathy is a process where a
person gets into another person’s
situation and experiences what the
other person feels and then is able
to step back and analyze the
situation. The nurse need not
necessarily have to experience it,
but has to be able to imagine the
BE feelings associated with the
EMPATHETIC experience.
A Psychiatric Nurse is someone
patients and co-workers rely on for
support. As such, it is clear that a
successful Psychiatric Nurse needs
to be an extremely reliable person.
Their demeanor on a day-to-day
basis must also be consistent.
When treating patients with mental
illness, it is important that a
nurse’s attitude or quality of care
does not waver from person to
RELIABILITY person, or from day
to day.
PROFESSIONALISM- Developing the
professional skills of a psychiatric nurse is
dependent upon learning as much as
possible about the patient, his illness, and
the helping role of the nurse as it
specifically applies to the patient.

ACCOUNTABILITY- According to Peplau

(1980), the need for personal accountability
and professional integrity is greater in
psychiatric practice than in any other type of
healthcare.

Mental health nurses are accountable for the

PROFESSIONALISM nature of the effort they make on behalf of
& the patients and answerable to patients for
the quality of their efforts.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The ability to think critically is crucial
for mental health nurses. A critical
thinker analyzes information before
drawing conclusions about it. It is
purposeful, reasonable, reflective
thinking that drives problem-solving
and decision-making and aims to
make judgments based on evidence.

PRACTICE
WHAT IS A NURSE ENTREPRENEUR?

Nurse entrepreneurs combine healthcare knowledge

and business sensibilities to develop successful
business ventures that center around optimal care
delivery. Nurse entrepreneurs can focus their business
on any of the numerous health-related categories, such
as information technology and patient data storage,
healthcare services, or medical devices.
WHAT IS A NURSE ENTREPRENEUR?
The work of nurse entrepreneurs carries the potential to make a
profound impact on healthcare.

Independently working to create new and innovative tools

and systematic industry advances, they can help lay the
foundation to move the concept of care delivery forward in
many ways.
More cost-effective means of care
delivery More efficient patient treatment
Create more robust individualized, proactive patient wellness
strategies
Nurse entrepreneurs can make it possible for patients to
have better control over their health and healthcare costs,
which could go a long way toward helping them improve their
quality of life.

ENTREPRENEURIAL NURSING IN THE
PHILIPPINES: PROJECT
ENTREPRENURSE
The project aims to:

Reduce the cost of health care for the country’s indigent

population by bringing primary health care services to poor rural
communities, Maximize employment opportunities for the
country’s unemployed nurses and
Utilize the country’s unemployed human resources for health for
the delivery of public health services and the achievement of
the country’s Millennium Development Goals, consistent with the
Formula One for Health framework of the Department of Health.

HEALTH
CARE
Most often, home care is viewed as follow-up care to inpatient,
partial, or outpatient hospitalization. The majority of home health
care is paid for by Medicare. Other sources include Medicaid, private
insurance, self- pay, and others.

NOTE: An acute psychiatric diagnosis is not enough to qualify for

the service. The client must show that he or she is unable to leave the
home without considerable difficulty or the assistance of another
person. The plan of treatment and subsequent charting must explain
why the client’s psychiatric disorder keeps him or her at home and
justify the need for home services. Home care must be prescribed by
a physician.
Psychiatric nurses may provide the following types of home nursing care:

Education and consultation to assist clients and caregivers in

managing symptoms of psychiatric illness.
Basic medical care, counseling, and education to clients who are
homebound for medical conditions but have a psychiatric condition
for which they have been receiving (and continue to need
ongoing) treatment.
Assessment and intervention for clients who are homebound and at
risk for developing serious psychiatric symptoms without skilled
care intervention.
The following components should be included in the
comprehensive assessment of the homebound client:

1.Client’s perception of the problem and need for assistance

2.Information regarding the client’s strengths and
personal habits
3.Health history, review of systems, and vital signs
4. Any recent changes (physical, psychosocial,
environmental) 5. Availability of support systems
6. Current medication regimen (including client's

IN
Psychiatric Home Health CONCLUSION:
Care Services and Wellness Programs have the
goal of recovery for clients with major mental illnesses that goes
beyond symptom control and medication management. Working with
clients to manage their own lives, make effective treatment decisions,
and have an improved quality of life—from the client’s point of view
—are central components of such programs. Mental health
promotion involves strengthening the client’s ability to bounce back from
adversity and manage the inevitable obstacles encountered in life.
Strategies include fostering self- efficacy and empowering the client to
have control over his or her life; improving the client’s resiliency, or
ability to bounce back emotionally from stressful events; and improving
the client’s ability to cope with the problems, stress, and strains of
everyday living.
