Chapter 1
Characteristics of Pure Devotional Service
"My dear mother, those who are My pure devotees, and who
have no desire for material benefit or philosophical
speculation, have their minds so much engaged
in My service that they are never interested
in asking Me for to live in My abode with Me.”
(S.B. 3.29.12-13)

Devotees have
no desire for the
5 types of liberation
Sälokya- live on the same planet
Särñöi—equal possession of opulence
Sämépya—equal association
Särüpya—Have the same features
sayujya— merging with the Lord
Six characteristics of pure devotional service

At the stage of sadhana:

1.kleça-ghné - immediate relief from all kinds of
material distress.

2. çubha-dä–
the beginning
of all auspiciousness.
At the stage of bhava:
3. mokñalaghutä-kåt : surpasses
even the happiness of liberation

4. su-durlabha—
difficult to achieve and
therefore very rare.
One must have the
mercy of a pure
devotee.
At the stage of Prema
5. sändränanda-viçeñätmä– Automatically fills
one with transcendental pleasure.
6. çré-kåñëäkarñiëé– it is the only means to attract
Kåñëa.

BRS 1.1.17
1. kleça-ghné - Relief
from Material Distress.
THREE causes of distress
1. papam – sinful action (par. 5-11)

2. bijam – material desire (par. 12-14)

3. avidya – ignorance, which

is the root cause (par. 15-16)
Relief from Material Distress con’t.
B.G. 18.66 / Krsna promises He will deliver you from all your sinful
reactions.
Two kinds of reactions
1. manifest sinful activities -parabdha
2. unmanifest sinful activities- aparabdha

Chronic disease
Legal implication
Low birth
Uneducated
Very ugly

Krishna Consciousness stops both reactions

immediately. (S.B. 11.14.19) Like a forest fire burns
everything into ashes
1. kleça-ghné - Relief from Material Distress con’t.
Sinful reaction causes two kinds of suffering

Papam Distress is part of

Sinful activities
a great cycle

Manifest (prarabdha) Unmanifest

Direct physical or
emotional suffering aprarabdha

Sinful inclination (KUTAM)

Indirect suffering by
increased sinful disposition

Sinful desire (bijam)

An injection of Krishna Consciousness
stops all evels of suffering
Ignorance- Avidya

Bijam sinful

Only Pure devotional service offers complete relief from
Material Distress

By austerity, giving charity , conducting

ritualistic ceremonies, performing karma,
jnana or yoga one can remove sinful
reaction but not the sinful desire seed

BIJA

BIJA
BIJA Bija
Devotional service
uproots ignorance
AVIDYA - IGNORANCE
1. S.B. 4.22.39 False ego = a tight
knot that keeps us tied in material
existence.
2. This knot is due to ignorance of our
real identity
3. Thus we act based on sense desire
and become entangled in sinful
material activities
4. In the Padma Purana Devotional
service is compaired to a forest fire
killing the snakes of material desire
Devotional service
Eradicates sinful reactions
Nullifies sinful desires
Counteracts material proclivities
and
Uproots ignorance.
Therefore, it is the only efficient and
effective way to achieve permanent
relief from all suffering.
2. çubha-dä the beginning of all auspiciousness.

Definition of
all auspiciousness

Beneficial and
attractive to all

The practitioner develops all good qualities

It provides happiness which is eternal, and
superior to all other happiness
çubha-dä All Auspicious
cont.

Beneficial to everyone
2. Çubha-dä All Auspicious cont.
The practitioner develops saintly qualities
One who is not a devotee has no good qualities

Academicaly
educated but acting
lower
than the animals
There are three basic kinds of happiness

Happiness that comes from merging in

the Brahman

Material happiness including mystic

siddhis

Krishna Conscious Happiness

The Happiness that comes from merging in the Brahman

Is temporary because there is every chance of

falling to the material platform again. ex:
Mayavadi Sannyasis.
Happiness coming from the siddhis or mystical perfections
is still material happiness and has an end.
8 Siddhis – Mystic Perfections
1. Anima –to become small like a particle

2. Manima –to become heavier than the heaviest

3. Laghima – to become lighter than a soft feather

4. Prapti – get anything and everything from
anywhere and everywhere
5. Ishita – to act freely to create something
wonderful or to annihilate anything at will
6. Vashita – control all material elements including people
7. Prakamya – possess such power as will never be frustrated in
any desire
8. Kamavasayita – assume any shape or form one may even
Material happiness from Sense gratification par.31
Is Temporary
Not the real goal of life
Renders a person more foolish, because it
causes one to forget their true identity.
Entangles one in material existence.
The happiness of Devotional Service
includes and surpasses all other happiness
Srila Prabhupada includes this
quality, surpasses the happiness
of liberation, Moksa
Laghutakrta, with Surdulabha
3. mokñalaghutä-kåt– Derides the
happiness of liberation

Dwarfs the happiness of becoming one with the

Supreme!
Prahlad praying to Nrsimhadeva The happiness of
Krnsa Consciousness includes all other happiness
Devotee doesn’t aspire for any other happiness
Ex: Klolaveca Sridhar.
Devotee does’t care a fig for
any other happiness (artha,
The ocean of material
kama ...) happiness is compared
to one drop of
transcendental
happiness
4. su-durlabhä-- rarely achieved
For two reasons:
A. One cannot achive dev. service by one’s own efforts.
• Lord Krsna does not award pure devotional
service easily!
Because the Lord Himself
becomes purchased by His
devotee!
5. sändränanda-viçeñätmä
Incalculably Condensed Bliss

Brahmananda happiness even multiplied by one

trillion will not equal an atomic fraction of the
happiness of pure devotional service.
Brahmananda happiness is compaired to the water
in the impression left by a calve’s hoof.
Three degrees of Happiness
Çubhadä- the happiness of Sädhana
bhakti – superior to sense gratification
and liberation

Mokña-laghutäkåta- the happiness of bhäva

bhakti—makes sense gratification and
liberation seem insignificant

Sändränanda-viñesätmä– the happiness of

prema-bhakti—so incalculably superior that
one cannot even perceive the existence of
sense gratification and liberation
6. çré-kåñëäkarñiëé-- attracts Krishna.
The embodiment of the highest level of
devotional service is Srimati Radharani
Madana Mohana Mohini attracts the
attractor of Cupid by Her Prema.
Pure devotional service,
being directly under the control of
the internal potency of Krishna,
attracts even Krishna Himself.

S.B. 11.14.20 Krishna to

Uddhava–nothing attracts
Me as devotional service does.

What really attracts Krsna?

S.B. 7.10.48-49 The devotee’s

humility, devotion, frienship
and love
The Lord is controlled by the love of His devotee
The Golden Rule
Vishnu should always be
remembered and never
forgotten at any time. All
rules and prohibitions
mentioned in the sastras
should be servants of these
two principles.
