baptized a very few there (v 14)
• So that none would say that he had
baptized in his own name (v 15)
• He did baptize some (v 16)
• Christ did not send him to baptize; but to
preach (v 17)
CHAPTER ONE
Let there be no divisions among you

Man’s Wisdom vs. God’s Wisdom (18-31)

• To the world, the preaching of the cross is
foolishness (v 18)
• God will destroy the wisdom of the wise (v
19)
• “Where is the wise”? (v 20)
• The “foolishness of preaching” (v 21)

• But God revealed (v 10)
• Who knows the things of a man except that
man himself? (v 11)
CHAPTER TWO
Christ Crucified
Wisdom the Holy Spirit Teaches (2:12-16)
• His wisdom came from above, from the
Spirit of God (v 12; see 2 Pet. 1:19-21)
• He compared spiritual things with
spiritual words (v 13)
• Uninspired men do not receive the thing
of the Spirit of God (v 14)

belongs to God (v 23)
CHAPTER FOUR
HOW SHALL I COME?
Judge Nothing Before the Time (4:1-5)
• Some apparently were questioning Paul’s
apostleship (v. 1)
• Men must be faithful as stewards of God (v. 2)
• Paul was unconcerned about their judgment of
him since God had sent him not them (v. 3)
• The Lord would judge his stewardship, not the

among them (v. 1)
• The Corinthians were “puffed up” about it. Paul
uses this term five times in this book (v. 2)
• Paul was not there but had already judged the
matter (John 7:24) (v. 3)
• “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Col.
3:17) (v. 4)

impenitent about sin in his life. Don’t even eat
with him (v. 10)
• “But now I have written unto you” (v. 11)
• We must “judge” (John 7:24) (v. 12)
• God will judge those who are without, so put
away that wicked person (v. 13)
CHURCH DISCIPLINE
PUT AWAY THAT WICKED PERSON

away “innocent” party)
• Those who have put away their spouse on
some ground other than fornication
• Those who marry an ineligible person
(Chart #5 by Thomas B. Warren in debate with
James Woodroof)
CHAPTER SEVEN
THE THINGS WHEREOF YE WROTE
TO ME
Christians Married to Unbelievers (7:12-16)
• Now Paul will address “the rest” of marriage
circumstances (v. 12). He addresses a Christian
man married to a non-Christian woman. Stay
married
• The apostle now reverses the role (v. 13)
• The “marriage” is “sanctified” (v. 14)
• But, if the unbeliever leaves, then let him leave
(v. 15)
• Don’t ever forget your influence (v. 16)
CHAPTER SEVEN

CHAPTER EIGHT
THINGS OFFERED UNTO IDOLS
Concerning Meats Offered to Idols

Many commentators have taken the following position:

“How shall Christians regard and treat these idols and
meats offered to them? In the consultation, held by the
apostles at Jerusalem, in reference to the circumcising of
the Gentiles, they wrote to the Gentile Christians to
‘abstain from things sacrificed to idols.’ (Acts 15:29)
When they were first converted to Christ, it seems that
they were commanded to abstain from meats offered

Concerning Meats Offered to Idols

idols, and their consciences were tender in regard to

them, the eating of meats offered would tend to revive
their reverence for them, and lead them back into
idolatry, so they were to abstain from it. As they grew
stronger in Christ, and came to know that an idol is
nothing, they might eat without their conscience being
defiled by eating. The question arose: Shall those who
can eat without defiling their consciences prohibited in
its use?” (A Commentary on the New Testament by
David Lipscomb. Edited with additional notes by J. W.
Shepherd, Volume II First Corinthians).

CHAPTER EIGHT
THINGS OFFERED UNTO IDOLS
When the Weak are Strong and the Strong are Weak

Things offered to idols (8:1-3)

• Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies (v. 1).
Many commentators suggest that the comment
“we know that we all have knowledge” is a quote
from the letter sent to Paul
• If you think you know, maybe you don’t (v. 2)
• The love of God is tantamount in this or any
other discussion (v. 3)
CHAPTER EIGHT
THINGS OFFERED UNTO IDOLS
When the Weak are Strong and the Strong are Weak

An idol is nothing in the world (8:4-7)

• Concerning eating things sacrificed to idols, we
know that an idol is nothing in the world (v. 4).
Again, commentators suggest Paul is quoting
from their letter to him. See also 10:19,20
• There are many that are called “gods” (v. 5)
• There is only one true God (v. 6)
• Not everyone “knows” this fact (v. 7). They
consider all meat as having been offered to an
idol
CHAPTER EIGHT

DOES PAUL ESTABLISH THAT
CHRISTIAN WOMEN THROUGHOUT THE
CHRISTIAN ERA SHOULD WORSHIP GOD
VEILED?
Some have so taught; I am not of that number
• Rom. 16:16, “Greet one another with an holy
kiss”
• Paul simply took a custom of their day and used
it to demonstrate the propriety of following a

spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues (v.

The Body is ONE (12:12-30)

• One Body – Many Members (v. 12)
• One Spirit – baptized into one body (v. 13). See
also Romans 2:25-29 and Colossians 2:6-12
• Body not one member, but many (v. 14)
• Foot is not hand; T/F not of the body? (v. 15)
• Ear is not eye; T/F not of the body? (v. 16)
• What if the whole body were an eye; how could
we smell? (v. 17)
• God set members in body to suit Him (v. 18)
CHAPTER TWELVE

• If one member – where is the body (v. 19)
• There are many members – only one body (v. 20)

(v. 30)
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE

Without Love Man is Nothing (13:1-3)

• The gifts used without love do the individual who
misuses them no good. I can speak in tongues,
but to no benefit (v. 1)
• If one has miraculous gifts without love, it does
him no good (v. 2)
• If I were to give everything I had to help others,
but without love it would do me no good (v. 3)
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE
Characteristics of Love (13:4-8)
• Suffers long, is kind, does not envy, does not
vaunt itself, and is not puffed up (v. 4)
• Does not behave improperly, does not seek her
own, is not easily provoked, and does not think
evil of one’s fellow man (v. 5)
• Does not rejoice in evil, but does rejoice in the
truth (v. 6)
• Bears all things, believes all things, hopes in all
things, and endures all things (v. 7)
• Does not fail, but miraculous gifts will cease (v.
8)
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE
Duration of Love (13:9-13)
• We (1st Century Christians) know in part and we
prophesy in part (v. 9)
• But, in contrast to then, when that which is
perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be
done away. See James 1:25 (v. 10)
• When the church was in her infancy, she did not
have the maturity of the completed Word (v. 11)
• But now, 1st Century, we know in part; but then
we will have all we need {2 Pet. 1:3} (v. 12)
• Love will never fail (v. 13)
Do Miracles Continue Today?
Charity never faileth: but whether there
be prophecies, they shall fail; whether
there be tongues, they shall cease;
whether there be knowledge, it shall
vanish away. For we know in part,
and we prophesy in part. But when
that which is perfect is come, then that
which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child,
I understood as a child, I thought as a
child: but when I became a man, I put
away childish things. For now we see
through a glass, darkly; but then face
to face: now I know in part; but then
shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity,
these three; but the greatest of these is
charity.

would learn (v. 24)
• His inner secrets would be laid bare by the truth
(v. 25)
