Roll No- 09
Introduction
What are ‘10 bagless days’
• The concept of 10 bagless days in schools is a fun-filled way of introducing vocational education right from
the school level.
• Main idea behind is to make vocational subjects an integral part of the teaching-learning process from classes
6 to 8.
• It will reduce the gap between bookish knowledge and the application of knowledge and expose children to
skills in work areas helping them to decide on future career paths.
• The guidelines for implementation are developed by PSSCIVE, Bhopal, NCERT.
• After reviewing many related literatures, the researchers identified some key dimensions of 10 bagless days
initiative on which, the perception of teachers were recorded. They are: Joyful learning, Community
involvement, Skill based activities, Real life application of knowledge & Reducing burden.
Activities include
Interaction sessions with vocational experts like sports persons, farmers, arcticians,
potters, crafts persons etc.

Visit to HEIs, ITIs, dairy farms, monument and heritage sites, museums, pottery
farms and other places of historical, national and international importance

Hands on experience on several vocational practices like carpentry, painting,

making crafts, gardening, welding, pottery etc.

Braining storming activities throughout the year like arts, quizzes, projects, debate,
discussions etc.
Rationale
• In India, jobs like plumbing, driving, painting, welding, carpentry are presumed to be the work of lower level
but in developed countries all the skilled jobs are viewed as same level. This mindset can change through 10-
bagless initiative where students will get a chance to intern with the people of small and large vocations of
their area. This will give them the experience of several jobs and ultimately the right direction to choose their
career in future (Gupta, 2021).

• Since decades, many policy documents and recommendations including Basic Education-1937, NPE-1986,
POA-1992 & NCF-2005 have emphasized on vocational education of school students ;however, it has not
been successfully brought into practice in the curriculum.

• As teachers are the fain functionaries wo are really going to implement of this program in grassroot level,
there is a need to take their views and opinions towards this program which are important to carry out this
initiative successfully.

• Researcher came across only a very few studies particularly based on 10-baglessdays. Only one study was
found in Odisha related to this initiative.
Objective
• To study the perception of teachers on 10-bagless days and its effect on joyful learning,
community involvement, skill-based activities, real life application of knowledge and burden
reduction.
Methodology
• Qualitative research design has been used to check the perception of teachers on 10-bagless days.
• 13 teachers were purposively selected as sample and data was collected through self-made interview
schedule by the researcher.
• Interview schedule was made taking into consideration all the key aspects of 10-bagless days purposed by
NEP-2020.
• The collected data was analyzed qualitatively and interpretations were made based on the important aspects
of 10-bagless days.
Major Findings
• Joyful Learning- Most of the teachers expressed that bagless days period no doubt will be a stress-free, joyful
learning experience for all the learners as they will engage themselves in several interesting activities like
field exploration and educational tours. In a collaborative environment with friends and teachers they will feel
free to share their queries, ideas and needs which will be helpful for the teachers to guide and help them.
• Community involvement- Through community interaction, children will be aware about the issues of their
community affecting lives; they can also be sensitized about various environmental or social problems, needs
and concerns. Their communication skills can be improved along with understanding others’ point of view.
They can realize their responsibility towards their community & nation in large.
• Skill based activities- Teachers suggested that indigenous crafts, arts and traditional skills of every locality
can be promoted through the scope for practice. The energy and excitement of young minds can be
channelized in a proper direction through these activities. various soft skills like aesthetic values, cooperation,
team work, judicious use of resources, dignity of labor will be developed.
Major Findings
• Real life application of knowledge - students can get the opportunities to connect the content knowledge
gained from books with its practical applicability which will help to reduce boundaries between the two. Some
teachers also expressed that, interaction with people of different occupation like carpenters, potters, sports
persons, gardeners and artists through bagless days will help create horizons among students to explore the
skills required for entering the work field

• Reducing burden-approximately half of the teachers agreed with the fact that coming school with no bag may
cause some disciplinary issues among students; and suggested that by involving students in challenging
tasks with regular monitoring & guidance of teachers can serve the purpose. Some said that No-Bag days is a
very remarkable step towards promoting learning by doing as the students can enjoy the activities with no
mental and physical burden of schoolbag. few teachers were somehow not sure whether bagless days has
any role to reduce the academic stress burden of students.
Conclusion
• At the end of the day, students need to choose an occupation for their everyday living. If they will get some
related exposure from the earliest possible time, that will obviously be beneficial for their future.
• After taking views of teachers, it was found that all the teachers are having very positive attitude towards the
key dimensions of 10-bagless days. Activities like surveys, case studies, interviews with community, cycle
rally, indoor materials making, crafts from wastes etc. are really stimulating for the all-round development of
children.
• It is also concluded from the study that teachers are aware and conscious about their roles towards the
effective implementation of this program like facilitating students to explore and engage in the area of their
interest, conducting counselling sessions to make activities meaningful, making parents and community
members aware for effective administration and designing classroom strategies based on academic subjects
in integration with activities etc.
Educational implication
• As a very limited number of studies have been conducted on 10-Bagless days, this study will be helpful for
the teachers to get a vision on the key dimensions of this initiative.
• Parents and other stakeholders will get meaningful ideas related to the possible activities that can be
designed for successful integration of vocation with academic.
• Community members and other related resource persons will be aware about their roles and responsibilities
to make this initiative a success.
