NURSING EDUCATION

• Controlled by state’s board of nursing and professional organizations.


• Originally taught knowledge and skills in preparation for hospital
practice.
• Now more varied practice settings,
• Critical thinking, health promotion, health maintenance and health
restoration.
NURSINGEDUCATION

• Two entry level nurses:


• *Registered Nurse (RN)
• * Licensed Practical Nurse or Vocational Nurse
(LPN or LVN)

TYPES OF EDUCATION PROGRAM
• Licensed Practical (Vocational) Nursing Programs
* Housed in community colleges, vocational schools, hospitals
or other independent health agencies.
* Last 9-12 months and include both classroom and clinical
experience
*Ladder program-
*NCLEX-PN to obtain licensure as a PN or VN
* Work under the supervision of a registered Nurse.
*Scope of practice varies by state regulation, usually provide
basic direct technical care.

Registered Nursing Programs
*Diploma Program

• Three-year program - the dominant nursing program & major source of nursing
graduates from late 1800s-1960s
• Have declined steadily since 1965- since ANA resolution
*Associate degree
Arose in early 50s, the first and only educ prog for nursing that was systematically
developed from planned research and experimentation.
Most take place in community colleges
The graduating students receives ADN, AA, AS, AAS with major in nursing.

• may be best defined as the strategic management
of nursing personnel, patient care, and facility
resources through the support of regulating
policies.

science of nursing

experiences of health and illness “, as defined by
American Nurses Association (ANA)

• a systematic inquiry designed to develop
knowledge about issues of importance to the
nursing profession, including nursing practice,
education, administration and informatics.
CONTEMPORARY NURSING PRACTICE

• An understanding of contemporary nursing practice


includes a look at definition of nursing, recipient of
nursing, scope of nursing, settings for nursing practice,
nurse practice acts and current standards of clinical
nursing practice.
DEFINITIONS OF NURSING

“ The act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him in


his recovery”.
.“The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or
well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or
it’s recovery (or to peaceful death ) that he would perform unaided if
he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge, and to do this in
such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible”
