Introduction
Plant layout is the arrangement of industrial facilities in a
manufacturing plant, crucial for optimizing production
processes, reducing costs, enhancing productivity, and ensuring
a safe working environment.

Types of Layouts

 Process Layout
 Product Layout
 Fixed Layout
 Combination Layout

Consideration of a Good Plant Layout

The process involves creating pathways for efficient material

flow, minimizing bottlenecks, enhancing ergonomics, and
adhering to safety regulations and industry standards for
continuous production.

Lighting

Factory lighting is the arrangement of lighting in the factory by which it provides clear and bright light at the
working plant for the safety and security of the employees.

Importance of Lighting In Garment Factory –

 Proper lighting in a workplace is important both for the workers and the manufacturer. Poor lighting at the
workplace leads to eye strain, fatigue, and accidents, and too much light causes safety and health issues like glare-
related headaches and stress. Both these scenarios lead to more errors hence more reworks, poor quality and low
productivity.

It should give a good distribution of light

 Fitting should be simple and easy to clean

6
Types of Lighting

1. General Lighting ,
2. Emergency Lighting ,
3. Task Lighting

1.General Lighting –

Lamp – To achieve uniform distribution of light over the working plane.

(Examples –Wipro Lighting, Tube Lights)

Side lighting –To achieve additional illumination on the working plane.

(Examples – LED Lights)
2. Emergency Lighting –

Suppose you are working as an engineer in any apparel industry and suddenly a
spark begins to produce in any live machine. In this condition, you will be
allowed to off the main switch in the area so it will be dark to exit the worker
without any accidents you will use emergency lighting.
(Examples – LED Light, LED Light Bulb)

3. Task Lighting –

90 % of produced light flux comes on the working surface.

(Example – LED Dimmable Machine Light)

HOW ARE THE DEPARTMENT OF FASHION SMITH
COMPANY LINKED WITH EACH OTHER

1. Fabric and trims are stored in a designated storage room ,

ideally located in the basement , close to the cutting area to
minimize material handling.

14
2. After a quality check, fabric is spread and
cut in the cutting area. This area is typically
located on the basement for better access to
fabric rolls .

3. The cut garment pieces are then

efficiently transferred to the stitching
department. The stitching department
would be on the first floor .

15
4. After stitching, garments undergo
inspection. Ideally, the inspection area would
be close to the stitching line to avoid
unnecessary movement.

5.Finally, inspected garments are sent to

the finishing department. The finishing
department is often located on the ground
floor for ease of access and proximity to
packaging and shipping areas.

Problems in Production

 Inefficient Material Flow

 WIP
 Hindered Floor of Material
 No of gates in production Floor

17
Solutions
 The layout will be redesigned to reduce product travel time and distance, thereby reducing waste and
improving efficiency.

 Position machines, workstations, and storage strategically to eliminate bottlenecks, maximize

workspace, and ensure smooth workflow.

 Increase the number of exit gates in the production floor.

 Design the layout with worker safety and comfort in mind, providing ample space, proper lighting,
and easy access to tools and materials.
