Early history
Microsoft originally marketed a spreadsheet program called
Multiplan in 1982.
Multiplan became very popular on CP/M systems, but on MS-DOS
systems it lost popularity to Lotus 1-2-3.
Microsoft released the first version of Excel for the Macintosh on
September 30, 1985, and the first Windows version was 2.05 (to
synchronize with the Macintosh version 2.2) in November 1987.
Lotus was slow to bring 1-2-3 to Windows and by the early 1990s,
Excel had started to outsell 1-2-3 and helped Microsoft achieve its
position as a leading PC software develo pe r.

Basic Terms in Excel
There are two basic ways to perform calculations in Excel:

1. Formulas
In Excel, a form ula is an express io n that operates on va lu es in a ra nge of ce
lls or a ce ll. For exa mple, =A1+A2+A3, whic h finds the sum of the range of
values fro m cell Al to cell A3.

2 . Functions
Functions are predefined formulas in Excel. They eliminate laborio us
n1anual entry of formulas while giving them human-friendly names.
For exam ple: =SUM(Ai:A3). The function sums all the values from Ai

Excel 2016 has 484 functions. Of these, 360 existed prior to

Excel 2010. Microsoft classifies these functions in 14
categories. Of the 484 current functions, 386 1nay be called

What Is a LOOKUP Function?

Lookup functions in Excel mean referencing a cell to

match values in another row or column against the
cell and thereby retrieving the corresponding results
from the respective rows and columns.
Uses of LOOKUP functions
Some uses of LOOKUP functions are:
•You can find the exact or appropriate match by using the
lookup function.
•Users can search for data both vertically (columns) and
horizontally (rows).
•It is simpler to use and does not require selecting the entire
table.
What Is VLOOKUP in Excel?
VLOOKUP is a powerful function in Excel that
searches for a value in the first column of a range
(table or array) and returns a corresponding value in
the same row from a specified column. The "V" in
VLOOKUP stands for "Vertical," indicating that it
searches vertically (downward) in a table.
Advantages VLookUp
 Quicker to type in the formula

 Fewer mistakes when typing in the formula

 Easier to spot mistakes

 Easier to expand the range

 Takes up less storage space

 Easier to remember when retyping

Differences between a VLOOKUP function and a LOOKUP function.

 LOOKUP allows for horizontal and vertical searching whereas VLOOKUP allows for vertical searching

 LOOKUP does not require an index value/only works on the second row/column whereas VLOOKUP
requires an index value

 LOOKUP usually only works when the data is sorted

 VLOOKUP only returns data to the right of the searched column

 VLOOKUP user can select either an approximate or exact match to the lookup value
OVERALL VIEW
Excel offers many user interface tweaks earliest
over the electro nic spreadsheets

Excel became the first spreadsheet to allow the user to define the
appearance of spreadsheets.

• It also introduced intelligent cell recomputation, where only

cells dependent on the cell be ing modified are updated

• Excel introduced many important features.

Excel also introduced extensive graphing capabilities.
