Wire Splices and Joints

Wire Splices and Joints

• Method of connecting two or more

wires to conduct electricity
• Connect damage wire and cables instead
of installing new one.
Pig Tail / Rat Tail

• Basic electrical splice which can be done

in solid or stranded wire.
• Wrapping two or more wires
symmetrically around their common axis.
Pig Tail / Rat Tail
Y - Splice

• A method of wrapping generally used

on small cables because the strands are
flexible and all can be wrapped in one
direction.
Y - Splice
Knotted Tap

• This splice is used when the splice is

subjected to strain or slippage.
Knotted Tap
Plain Tap

• It is also used to a great extent

joining, particularly for temporary
lighting system.
Plain Tap
Aerial Tap

• Temporary tap usually done in

construction sites.
• Usually done on outside work, where
wires are subjected to considerable
movement
Aerial Tap
Duplex Cross Joint

• Two tap wire turned simultaneously.

• Used when two tap wire are under
heavy tensile stress.
Duplex Cross Joint
Western Union Short Tie

• Used for interior wiring installation to

extend the length of wire from one point
to another.
Western Union Short Tie
Western Union Long Tie

• Used extensively for outside wiring.

• The more twist before wrapping the end,
the greater it withstand the tensile stress.
Western Union Long Tie
Cross Joint

• Used when two tap wires are to extend

away from the branch.
• Conductors are in opposite direction.
Cross Joint
Wrapped Tap or Tee Joint

• Used on large solid wire where the tap

wire is hard to wrap around the main
wire.
